#resolution 2019

Tea time! :D

Please think about the difference between practice and performance. Or maybe learning and mastery.

I see so many people saying they’re going to get back into x thing they used to do. But take a moment to think about why you don’t do x anymore?

Lemme tell you. I’ve been there

I grew up in a very musical family. Like at any given time someone was singing or playing something. My brother walked around with his guitar always at the ready like gun slinger but with chords.

I was considered talented. not gifted or anything, no prodigy here, but work hard and I could be really good. And I loved music. I loved living in it, I loved performing it. (One of my earliest memories is performing on stage with my mother and *finally* figuring out how to sing harmony. I think I was 4)

But what I hated was practicing. Ugh so boring! It didn’t matter how much I was told how awesome I could be if I practiced. It didn’t matter how much better I got when I did knuckle down and practice for a few weeks.

The thing is that practicing music is boring to me.

Why am I telling you this story now? Because I have four instruments in my closet. I enjoy performing with them. And I will never put in more than the bare minimum to perform competently.

I’ve made new year’s resolutions to play more. But I’m done with that crap.

For the new year I’m only committing myself to doing things I enjoy the practice of, not the results.
