I watched Ready or Not this weekend, and had a few things to say about it. Spoilers under the cut (I know the film came out last summer, but I prefer to watch things as unspoiled as possible, so I'll extend the same courtesy). I also mention some of the gory bits and deaths in the film, btw. Originally posted to my dreamwidth over here.
I guess I have mixed feelings about the ending. On the one hand yes, it was cathartic (which is my number one wish when I watch a horror film). Besides, if the demon (the Devil) had appeared for more than two seconds, or interacted more with Grace, I’d probably be writing fic right now. As it is, I ship them a little bit anyway (that blink-and-you-miss-it acknowledgment of respect).
On the other hand, I’m not sure I like the confirmation of the family’s beliefs. If you haven’t watched the film, the premise is this: when someone new marries into the (disgustingly rich) family, they have to pick a card out of a box that, according to legend, a mysterious creature (the demon) gave to an ancestor. There was a secret pact where the family would thrive, and if the card picked was “Hide and Seek”, out of all the possible games, the family had to kill the bride/groom in a ritual before sunrise. Or the demon would kill them all.
In the end, Grace makes it past sunrise by the skin of her teeth, and then everyone in the family that remained blew up. Literally. A couple of kids included, though that happens conveniently out of sight. Of course, I was rooting for all of them to die, duh. I liked Grace a lot, even more than I expected (I just love a good “rags to riches” story. And I felt so bad for her when she talked about how she was happy to marry into the family because as a former foster kid she wanted a place and people to belong with, knowing what would happen next). But I don’t know. I wanted karma to get to them some other way.
I almost never argue for stories to have LESS supernatural elements, and this is the second one in the last few years lol (if anyone’s curious, the other one was the DCEU’s Wonder Woman. I found the final fight so, so underwhelming, and out of place with the rest of the film). I’m conflicted.
Like I said, my favorite part of the film was the protagonist, Grace, the bride. The actress has a natural charm that made it really easy to immediately root for her. I loved how absolutely feral she looked by the end, when she avoided the sacrificed and pointed a knife to the rest, grunting like an animal. And even through my aforementioned mixed feelings, I loved how she started laughing with glee when the family started dying around her.
In what’s probably an unpopular opinion, I liked the groom, and his relationship with Grace (in case anyone hasn’t noticed: yes, I only retained Grace’s name. I’m terrible with names). Most people seem to lean towards Grace/her brother-in-law, and I can see why (he’s conflicted about the sacrifice and ends up killed by his own wife trying to protect Grace).
But yeah, I preferred the storyline with the groom. He had tried to help Grace from the beginning, first by trying to dissuade her from the wedding, then trying to get her out of the house. Until the very end, as he finds his dying brother (and assumes, reasonably, Grace did it), and sees Grace killing his mother. Given genre conventions, I would’ve been more surprised if he didn’t make a face-heel turn (he’s Bluebeard, in a sense), but I found his pretty relatable. He’d tried to escape the family (the cult), but he was still tied to them, through love and through brainwashing. Ultimately, I rooted for Grace to beat them all, so good riddance, but that doesn’t mean I don’t find his side of things compelling.
Overall, I liked it, even if the resolution fell a little flat with me. And I loved the last shot: Grace sitting in the front stairs, the house in flames behind her, covered in blood and completely disheveled in the remains of her wedding dress. She lights up a cigarette from her mother-in-law’s stash, and when someone off-screen (a cop, or another type of first responder) asks her what happened to her, she looks at the horizon and replies “in-laws”.
She DID marry into the family before all that bullshit happened, so I like to imagine she gets to keep their riches hehe.
