You throw the alien fruit- an orange, youâd been told- up into the air, and catch it with one hand. You do this repeatedly, idly, as you attempt to do the same thing with your other hand, although using magic instead. It floats untouched up into the air, higher and higher with each twitch of your fingers, before returning to hover just above you.
The motions interchange, one after the other, until eventually, you find a steady rhythm to do both simultaneously. Once you hit your stride, your brows knit with concentration and you continue these motions for easily the next ten minutes.
âMinera, I wish to speak with you!â calls an annoyingly familiar voice, beneath where you sit amongst the tree branches. Their tone was calm, only raised in volume enough to catch your attention.
Unfortunately, your annoyance doesnât stop there, because you were so busy focusing on your fruit-tossing that you didnât notice their approach. Your face twists as the two oranges fall from the air and bump you straight in the forehead.
âOw- What do you want, Sole? Canât you see Iâm busy?â you grumble, one hand moving to soothe the aching spot on your skin as you turn to look down at them.
Adenza replies, tilting their head curiously and speaking with a little smirk clear in their voice, âWith tossing oranges? It did not seem too important that we couldnât talk.â
âSorry, canât hear you from all the way down there over my terrible headache.â
The gold blood giggles, âThen Iâll come up to meet you, howâs that?â
âHow about n--â Youâre not even able to finish your refusal before their glassy wings have carried them up onto a tree branch beside you. Theyâre looking down at you, head hovering over yours. A big pout crosses your face as you push their shoulder, sitting up so theyâre no longer looking down at you.
âOops, too late,â Adenza says, already swinging their feet lazily.
You roll your eyes, turning properly now to look them right in their silver and orange eyes. âUgh, fastidio, youâre my least favorite troll, you know?â
Adenza only continues to smile at you, until a moment passes and a mischievous look crosses their face, âActually, I think you like me⊠donât you, Otavah?â
Immediately you scoff, turning your head away from them indignantly and crossing your arms, âAs if- I donât get attached to people like the rest of you do.â And yet, thereâs the faintest bit of blush dusting your cheeks when you say this. Frustratingly.
Adenza hums, mulling over your reply a moment, giving you enough time to shake off their comment and look back at them.
âWhy do you phrase things like that?â They finally ask, expression more focused and discerning this time around. âLike youâre different from us?â Adenzaâs eyes are brighter now, reflecting a flare of their inner light. One might call it symbolic of a burning curiosity, something that would only have a bittersweet irony down the line.
Immediately you tense a bit, giving them a wary look and closing yourself off slightly. âI didnât say anything weird, mind your business.â
Gentle, thatâs how youâd describe the way their next words came out, and understanding, too.
âItâs okay, Otavah. Do you want to know a secret?â they lean towards you slightly, like theyâre about to whisper something to you.
You canât help it, youâve always been the curious type, so you lean in slightly as if to indicate that you did indeed wish to know it.
âIâm weird too.â Their smile is serene.
Thereâs not a second that passes before you roll your eyes and groan, âThatâs hardly a secret! I already know youâre weird, even without the fact youâve also got wings.â
âI mean Iâm not a troll either, silly,â Their gaze falls down to their fingertips as a warm light glows from the surface of each one, then they flicker their gaze up at you. âI think Iâm a star, like the ones in the sky.â
âOh? And what makes you think youâre something as amazing as that? Youâre just trying to seem better than me arenât you- came here to rub that in my face or something?â Youâre on your feet now, looking down at them as if to compensate for your sensitive ego being hurt.
âBeing an alien is amazing too, you shouldnât compare yourself to me so much.â They stand as well, regarding you with a playful air as if to ease your self-consciousness.
You blink in shock at their astute observation, not fully knowing how they could possibly know such a thing about you. âWh- I- How did you know that, no one knows that!âÂ
After your childish outburst, you manage to realize the gravity of such a reveal. Mutants were barely tolerable around here, but an alien? Youâre not strong enough to defend yourself yet--
âDonât make me hurt youâŠâ Your expression turns serious- or as serious as an inexperienced with combat child can muster, anyway, and you raise your hands up in a defensive position.
âI wonât tell, I promise.â They assure you, hands outstretched slightly in your direction.
âHow do I know that? Youâve always disliked me-â You rebut quickly.
Adenzaâs expression turns somber, which isnât all that special except for the fact theyâve never directed it towards you before. âYouâre my friend, Otavah.â
The admission causes your hands to fall and your expression to settle a little. âYou have to make a deal with me, then Iâll believe you.â
âA deal? ...Do I get anything out of it?â
That gives you pause, your face scrunching as you think before you make a quiet little âoh!â of realization to yourself. âI wonât harm you! You promise me you wonât tell, I promise I wonât harm you.â
âEver?â They question you, surprised.
âSure, why not-- But you have to promise seriously, handshake and everything, thatâs how the magic works.â You say completely seriously, immediately extending your hand to them, urgent with the want to secure your secret⊠and not yet aware that you didnât need to hold hands about it.
âItâs a deal then.â they smile brightly as they grab your hand and shake it, now forced to keep your secret to themself.
âItâs a deal,â you say in reply, bound to never cause them harm.

Major Characters: Otavah Minera (The Reshaper) and Seifer Sanaca
Minor Character: Leiere Kedrie (NPC)
Setting: The Exchanges Fleet Vessel; Very distant past
ââ Google Docs Link ââ
âUp for a spar, General?â Spoke up the voice of Seifer, as he absently rotated his wrist, causing the blue metal of his dagger to gleam under the artificial lights-- unlike his short sword, which rested still in his other hand.
Two members of The Exchange's crew had just finished with a little sparring match of their own, ceasing the fight only when General Minera finally called it a draw. The combatants had shaken hands with sweaty palms and through labored breaths, but they both seemed content with the fact that neither of them had taken a loss in their friendly battle.
The General liked to watch their crew duke it out, stating that it was 'not only good for morale but made for excellent entertainment as well'. No one could really disagree with that sentiment either, it was a solid point. A lot of the crew would often stop in to watch a match going down, it really was a strong point of camaraderie on the ship.
Rising up from their lounging position off to the side of the ring, Otavah smiles cheekily at their lieutenant. âThink you can handle me at my best, Seifer?â
He lets out a puff of air from his nose in amusement, âI wonât start flying if you donât.â
âYou drive a hard bargain, Celeste, but Iâll try and hold off for your sake.â
The General has always been a bit of a tease, and it rarely mattered who he was talking to, Seifer was certainly no exception anyway. No one would expect Otavah to pass on the use of his wings, the man never put them away, and they were essential to the style of fighting heâd cultivated over the sweeps.
That being said, it wouldnât kill him not to fly 15 feet up in the air, where the only one who could fight properly was him. Even he could admit things might get boring in that case, no matter how much the General loved playing a little dirty.
As the two men step up to take their opposing spots in the ring, their eyes meet. Seifer shakes his head slightly to knock his poof of a ponytail over his shoulder to rest against his back, then brings both of his weapons up in a readied stance.
Meanwhile, Otavah puts out both of his arms straight in front of him, rotating them in a swift motion so they cross over each other, hands now gripping an apparated pole blade and untwisting with a flourish to be in a more battle-ready position. It was hard to deny that despite how extra he was in everything he did, it was rather impressive to watch.
Seifer's mind wasnât particularly focused on that aspect of things, although that didnât stop Leiere, a member of his own squad, from cheering out, âWoohoo! Go, General! Kick his ass!â with all four of his arms fist pumping in the air for added emphasis.
Seeing the pleased and smug look that came over Otavahâs face was enough to make Seifer playfully roll his eyes. âThanks for the damn vote of confidence, Lee! The support is noted!â
In that brief moment of distraction, Otavah already starts to play. Large, shimmering wings flit in small movements to aid in his languid approach. Seifer only has a moment to react to the pole blade curving up for his jaw, his arm twitching into a reaction to parry with his dagger. The metal clashes loudly, and several of the crew members around hoot and holler at the clutch counter.
Thereâs a brief pause where ringed violet eyes meet bronze crescents and General Minera laughs. Though the two of them are holding against each other in a seemingly effortless display, both are exerting enough strength to keep their strifes pressed together with a slight tremble on both sides.
âAlready playing dirty, Otavah? I expected better.â Seifer says through a smile.
âDid you now? Your mistake, then, Celeste.â he retorts, a matching smile set on his own features.
In their brief back and forth, Seifer had moved his other hand slowly up, only to then bring it down in a swift move to try and slice into his combatant's shoulder. Otavah doesnât even look toward the incoming threat as his wings flutter, allowing him to shift his shoulder back and away from harm. Without pause, he follows the movement up with a rotation of his blade to the left, forcing the sword into the ground.
âShit-â is all Seifer has time to say before he has to make an evasive maneuver of his own, bending back at the waist to try and dodge the pole as it comes back for the upswing to the right. His reaction is only a fraction too late, but itâs enough that the weapon draws a small cut into his jaw, letting neon violet drops fly into the air.
At the first draw of blood, there are wide eyes and even more cheers from the onlookers. Things continue this way for a while, easily for over twenty minutes, as the two narrowly dodge each other's well-timed movements- or they seemingly fail to account for something, and they acquire a knick from one of the various weapons at play.
Moments occur where Seifer can feel the haze of magic buzzing around certain movements, but he keeps his mouth shut and allows himself moments of pride when his skills seem to keep him level with the mild fuckery afoot. Those continued moments of added confidence eventually become Seiferâs downfall, however, as his eyes track a repeated movement that the General had been using to go for a chest hit.
Seifer moves to parry it as he had in previous times, but the blade never actually makes contact with his dagger, and he notices the change too late.
Using a dancer's step, Otavah suddenly pivots in a spin to Seiferâs left, letting his right leg slide along the floor to bring him down low where his pole blade then sweeps behind his Lieutenants legs and knocks him down onto his back with a resounding thud.
As the air comes back to Seiferâs lungs, he sees the tip of his opponent's blade hovering over his chest.
Several voices let out âoohâsâ of sympathy, and a couple of others suck in air through their teeth at the sound. Just as many others also offer up a round of cheers or applause for the performance that the two of them gave.
âI believe youâve lost, my dearest lieutenant.â
âYeah, well,â A grunt as he pushes himself up onto his elbows, âIâd say I did pretty good given the integrity of my opponent, wouldnât you?â
Another rich chuckle escapes his superior at that. âIf I didnât know better, I would think you were insulting me, Seifer.â
Otavah pulls his blade away and vanishes it off to gods only knows where before reaching out an olive branch of assistance: offering to help Seifer up. The violet reaches up to take it before it suddenly gets pulled away from reach. Another roll of Seifer's eyes, âYouâre such an asshole, you know that?â
The Generals eyes glitter in amusement before reextending his hand. âOnly messing with you my friend, no tricks this time.â
A skeptical look levels itself at Otavah for a long moment before Seifer, once again, reaches out to take their hand, and this time he makes contact, smacking their hands together audibly as heâs pulled to his feet.
âAlright, Iâm gonna go take one hell of a power nap, if you donât mind, General.â With that comment, Seifer begins to take his leave, followed quickly by Leiere- who was about to start chatting him up, before a voice calls after them both.
âBy all means, Lieutenant,â they shrug, relaxed as always, âbut donât forget that your group is scheduled for a scouting mission at o-800 sharp!â
With a soft groan, Seifer only gives a thumbs-up in reply as the duo turns the corner.
> In the early part of the night, you see Reshaper lounging in a cushioned corner booth-- drink in hand-- as he chats up someone closely seated with him. Not across the table, but not next to him either.
> In between chatter and sips of their preferred drinks, the two exchange smirks or curious smiles over whatever the topics of their conversations become.
> It seems to be an amicable start to the evening; comfortable, even.
...
> That's not where the magical man's night seems to end, however.
> Although he does not find himself at this year's prestigious perigee ball, he does instead finds himself back at hive. Music resonates softly in the background as he dances playfully with a little demon.
> They cheekily call the demon a 'cute little kitten' as they spin them around in the air with a laugh like a wind chime.

Oh, how you hate this predicament youâve found yourself in, really it's not like you could have known that today's exchange would turn out this way, but still. Itâs just awful and you donât want to be here.
As you land on the stone path before The Lustrous-- before Adenzaâs grand cathedral, the events that led you to this encounter flicker through your mind.
It was some younger troll who had come to you late at night, barely a couple of hours before sunrise, desperate for you to take their name from the world and reshape their identity.Â
You accepted, of course, why wouldnât you? Sure, you were about to settle down for the morning and go to sleep, but it was one of the fastest feats of magic you can perform. You didnât know that there was another powerful influence already inflicted upon them until it was too late and now... Now you had to personally ask Adenza to free them of their influence for your exchange to complete. If you didnât, you couldnât perform any more exchanges and that would have disastrous consequences for you.
So, off you went to speak to your old friend after all this time.
You shake your head to clear out the recollection and focus on addressing the present, letting the chime of your chains calm your elevated heart rate. You exhale, then open the large wooden doors before you, keeping your hands raised in a defensive position as soon as you finish. You know they have a guard of some kind and you didnât live this long only to get skewered by some overprotective delusional fool.
âAdenza, I need to speak with you, itâsâŠâ You hesitate as your half-moon gaze flits upward to the radiant figure lounging on the altar ahead, taking in the devil you just thought of. Mentally, you know that they wouldnât appreciate the comparison, but youâre still too bitter to care how they feel about anything. Finally, the end of your sentence slips out in a murmur, â...Itâs your old friend, I need something.â
The gold bloods gaze has been on you since you entered and their expression is as unreadable as you expected. Theyâre smiling faintly, of course, but that doesnât really mean anything. You donât see their guard at this moment and you thank the stars for that because the faster youâre done here the better. You hate seeing this.
âAh, Tavian, itâs been so long since Iâve seen you and we have spoken to one another. I would have visited you, but our home was gone by the time I returned.â
The way with which they mention it so casually irritates you and you wonder if they care. You know they may have, once, a long time ago before they blinded themself with their own luminous ego. âYes, well, shame it is to say, Iâm not here to reminisce or catch up. I need you to remove whatever youâre doing to the Blue that came to me the other night. Itâs preventing me from my work and Iâm sure you can imagine how un-fun that is for me.â Youâve closed your wings, but have yet to put them away, just in case they donât take kindly to your demands and you need to make an escape. You donât trust this place.
Adenza frowns. You arenât sure exactly what that means, since you havenât peered in on them in some time, but it definitely makes you nervous.
âYes, I know to whom you are referring.â
That does not bode well, even still after all these sweeps, you know a short sentence from someone like Adenza can be a bad sign. A touch of sweat beads on your forehead when you see their giant bodyguard come from behind and loom over them to glare at you, even from this distance his tall and muscular stature intimidates you. You have to bite back your normal cheeky replies and instead schmooze. This feels so beneath you, but you know you probably canât fend off both of them, youâre just not built for that.
âLook, Your Lustrousness, I did not know they were one of yours before accepting their request. I am trying to get this over with as quickly and easily as possible, whatâs one follower for a quick chat with an old friend anyway?â This isnât you, well, not the way you speak and it certainly isnât the way you feel about any of this, but youâre no idiot, so you just hold your tongue for now.
Their smile returns a little as they reply, âYou are right Tavian, let me offer you this extension of goodwill, if I may. I would hate for us to be on bad terms after our growing up together.â They look over their shoulder at their-- Mate? Bodyguard? âŠAssistant? Youâre still not completely sure-- And then they give a small nod. Before long the blue you were locked into an exchange with is brought forward to stand in front of Adenza, facing you.
This action gives you the worst feeling youâve had since you arrived here, but you decide to wait for them to do as you asked and keep your mouth shut.
Adenza sits up with a wince, yet seems unimpeded by it as they outstretch their hands to be on either side of the blue-bloods head. Their eyes begin to glow with warm radiant light, one that usually inspires awe but to you only brings out discomfort.
After a moment their nose begins to bleed. You think thatâs the worst of it but then the Blueâs eyes begin to bleed and they cry out, falling to their knees in pain.
âAll taken care of, now please, take them with you and be on your way for the evening Tavian, I must retireâŠâ
Youâre frozen for a moment before your brain finally catches up with what just happened. It only takes another second before you swoop in and grab the injured troll, ushering them outside with you as quickly as you can.
As you exit through the double doors of the cathedral with a whimpering troll in your arms, you canât help but think of what couldâve happened to the troll you used to know; The one who left to help people with their gifts, not to hurt them.

Major Character: Julius Monter
Minor Character: Tavian Mercur (The Reshaper)

You were still reeling at the revelation of your ancestor being thrust upon you-- and not even just their existence, but that they were probably still alive! You had just sent King on his way and F2 back to her room with a colorful band-aid, followed by a pat on the shoulder. Which of course meant that your lab space now sat quiet and empty, apart from the steady ticking of your beloved pocket watch.
Moments later, that sound was joined by the tap of your pen, as you absently clicked it against your clipboard as if it would conjure up an answer for you to record. Any answer at all, really, you were just so horribly curious... how do they still live? why? do they know of you? All these questions and no answers. When it was something outside of your obsession, you often came up short on how to tackle it and this wasnât an exception.
It wasnât long before your train of thought was interrupted though, as a sudden gust of wind rushed past your ears, causing you to shiver slightly and turn to look behind you with what could only be described as a look of parental irritation. To your surprise though, before you could even think to bring out your parenting voice, you caught what looked like a scroll drifting to the floor.
âWhere could this have come from? Is someone here?â
Although your anxiety was now beginning to rise in the back of your mind, you choose to let your curiosity guide you while it still overtook your fears, grabbing the foreign parchment from the floor. With a nervous exhale you pull your hair from your face and tie it up, taking advantage of what little vision your other eye offers as you unfurl the scroll to read what-- if anything-- it might say.
To say the contents surprise you would be an understatement.
It reads: âHello little Mercur--â
Your anxiety spikes at reading that name, âHow do they know-- No! You must remain calm⊠thereâs surely a rational explanation, as there always is.â
You press on and begin to read again, unable to let your questions and fears go unanswered.
âHello little Mercur, I know you very well and it seems that you are starting to learn of me, now arenât you?â
âI do not plan to interfere with you or your work, however, I thought I could offer you a treat since you entertain me so often. I am fond of trading you see, so this will be simple: Iâll offer you the chance to ask me anything youâd like to know about me and I will answer it for you, as my part of this unspoken Exchange. No need to fret my little descendant, your half of this is already done, so you only stand to gain from our interaction.â
You feel your vision blur, your mind is racing with far too many thoughts to even parse them all yourself. You are exhausted from your nights' work and yet on such a rush of adrenaline that surely sleeping will be evading you today. Before you allow yourself to ask the obvious question at the forefront of your mind, you continue reading.
âNow Iâm sure this whole process and its workings will evade you but! To ask me your question, all you must do is write your inquiry on the space below-- and do not doubt me, I am more powerful than you will ever know, Little Juli.â
You ignore how uncomfortable hearing that nickname feels and why it makes you tense up and focus instead on his implication. What a preposterous claim⊠at least, thatâs your initial thought before you remember just how old this troll must be and the fact he was able to get this to you unseen in the first place. Thereâs no time to waste, not in your world, so you decide to humor it and see if anything really does happen.
You take your pen from earlier and write out âHow have you lived so long?â
You want to tack on a hundred other questions, but a part of you knows they will go unanswered, so you refrain. Once the question mark is placed upon the paper it evaporates into a brownish mist. You have no time to react before it appears back in your hands once more in that same breeze as it had only minutes ago.
A stunned blink is all you can muster, eyes wide and brows raised, as the additional words before you read âMagic, young Julian. Something you will never have.â

Reshaper is, of course, at the ball !
He's flitting about between his companions and friends, most of whom already have plans of their own, but still managing to catch them for chats here and there.
When no one is looking, he uses a little magic to change the color of someone's outfit, but only in the back out of their sight, or he's causing someone to spin a few extra times as their dance partner attempts to twirl them, making them dizzy before chuckling and wandering away.
Oh, and of course, he's stealing too. Can't be helped, really.
When he partakes in the dancing himself, he switches casually between partners having interesting conversations and gossip, some of which you may learn about right now...
