Specks of light glimmered across the sky as evening approached. Coruscant, with its ever-present hum, stirred under her feet. Padmé lounged in her quarters straightening her belongings, her hips complaining as she retrieved discarded laundry on the floor. 

                        Twenty years had passed since Order 66.

Her children were adults themselves. Raising Luke and Leia made fighting in the Clone Wars seem like child’s play. Motherhood altered her perception; her awareness was heightened to extremes. 

                    Worry was her constant state of mind; no change.

By a galaxy given miracle, Anakin had evaded the dark side through the years. Her heart softened when she remembered his unconditional love for the children; a part of her believed without Luke and Leia, his rage would have burned too deeply to recover. Luke, with his indomitable will and impulsive heroism.

Indeed, Luke troubled Padmé most. Despite her efforts and Anakin’s encouragement, anxiety coursed through her veins pondering even the little she knew about Jedi training and its rigor. It seemed only yesterday he was taking his first steps, knocking into side tables and bedposts; now he wielded a lightsaber and flew a starfighter.

                               Years may as well be seconds.

A sharp knock at the door echoed through the flat; Padmé gasped.

I really don’t like WEWH. Because there’s no actually good option. Arguably the best options are public truce or Briala controlling Gaspard but neither of which are good.

Celene still acts like a spoiled child on the throne, and never takes the blame for the things she does. “I burned Halamshiral because Gaspard beat me at the Game” no, you burned Halamshiral because you can’t commit to anything you want to do. You worry about the opinion of the people more than what’s right at the end of the day. But she can’t admit that to herself. It’s “he beat me” not “I fucked up” not “I should have stood by my original plan” not “Why don’t I wait a few days for Briala to come back and see how things fall” not “How to I solve this without fucking over the elves again.” She goes into it knowing she’s betraying Briala and still has the nerve to be snippy when Briala’s upset with her later?

And like. Gaspard is a brute. He’s all soldier and little finesse unless he wants to be. Is the throne his by blood? Sure, but what good is ruling a country if you’re willing to raze it to the ground to unseat the person on “your” throne? He’s a brute, doesn’t care at all about the elves, mostly only cares about his power and war. But at least you know where he stands. If he gives his word he’s honorbound to it (unless it’s unconvient and he can find a way around the chevalier’s code.)

And then you have Briala who couldn’t have the throne if she wanted it who cares only about the plight of her people and making it better but not necessarily realizing that the backlash from so many changes so fast could be very detrimental to her cause as well. Unfortunately, change has to happen slowly. And the elves have suffered too long to not take an inch and demand a mile- and they deserve the mile, but when you’ve been oppressed so long it can be hard to realize how long the mile is.

Like. I want to like Celene. I want her to be likable. I want her to hold herself accountable, I want her to pick a political stance and commit to it come hell or high water or the Game. But she doesn’t. Part of the reason I adore her in my TME rewrite is because she does. She commits to the elves, to Briala. She loses her throne, sure, but she immediately goes to Halamshiral and raises the rebellion again, starts an entire civil war. Is war her forte? No, it’s Gaspard’s and now he has the entire Orlesian army to back him but she has promises of power and elevation of an oppressed people at her side. She has Briala and Michel and Felassan (who is mostly there for Briala but still) She has unwavering loyalty from a small few and trust and patience that the rest will follow. I like her when she commits to things.

But that way Celene, Michel, and Briala are already together with the rebellion, get to toy with how Felassan does things, toy with how the Eluvians are found and used to help reclaim the Empire. I feel like it wouldn’t end until, like, WEWH? So that instead of Gaspard being the unruly party you’re fixing a different civil war. 'cept then I don’t think Gaspard would have thrown a ball But like, if I write it with Elgara she could be part of the rebellion, sent to the conclave to seek the Divine’s advice or help, end up Inquisitor and in an even better position to help Orlais Corypheus would have to have a slightly different plan for Gaspard than he did Celene tho

Gaspard may have thrown a ball because that’s just How Things Are Done In Orlais, but it would have been a much more restricted affair. Much more restrained. Also I dunno, I imagine “manipulate Gaspard’s sister into killing her brother and framing the Inquisition” makes sense as a plot.

It does but I don’t know if that would get him Orlais. Like, wasn’t the point supposed to be get Gaspard in power and manipulate the throne through Florienne to help Corypheus? The the level of rebellion and chaos that an actual elven uprising would cause that plan would need at least a little tweaking

The plan was absolutely upheaval in Orlais - remember, the idea was to kill Celene and frame Gaspard for it.

Exactly. Reframe it as “Kill Gaspard and frame Celene for it,” and it still works.

Or even just kill Gaspard. Like the nobles of Orlais aren’t gonna unite behind Celene after this even with Gaspard out of the picture and if Celene did assassinate the tyrant then the elves might be even more loyal to her and that could be unifying and stabilizing on that front

No, but the problem is that with Gaspard dead it won’t matter, the succession would fall back on Celene. Killing her ensures a) Florianne is technically the heir and b) no one can look to Celene to lead Orlais. BUT obviously we don’t want Celene dead for the purposes of the fic, but that would make the most sense as a plan of action

He and Celene get to actually spend time among the elves and realize that they are people who are struggling, Briala gets to really be confronted by the difference between “palace servant” and this and Elgara and Thren facilitate all of that by being born and raised in the slums and having gone two different directions with it Thren probably hates Elgara at first

She willingly became a noble’s pet I figure they’ll warm to each other, but Thren hates her at first. Elgara only gets as high in the rebellion as she does because of favor from Briala and Celene

Yeah, she’s probably significantly doubted by a lot of the rebellion up to WEWH if not continuing after She keeps proving herself but it makes sense to doubt

but Elgara’s one of the one that knows violence isn’t going to solve everything in the civil war and is quick to point out when violence isn’t the best solution. It’s why she gets sent to the Conclave She’s important enough to represent the rebellion but low enough that it can survive without her and civil enough to not get heated

I mean, yeah, I more mean they could both come running about “Hey the Templars are gonna attack” because they could have been investigating that together. Send Rhys back to Orlais for the rebellion Or vice versa I feel like Rhys and Evangeline would be more help to the rebellion tho so they wouldn’t stay with the Inquisition(edited)just pop in once in a while with messages if they’re in the area

Could be Cole comes to warn and after the relocation Rhys and Evangeline are sent to Skyhold to make sure the rebellion knows where it is and make sure Elgara’s okay, relay information and then head on back. So Cole can hide easily from them and stay with the Inquisition
