We never see a truly Armand POV but I would assume he's haunted by past relationships but mostly his first formative one. This song is (to me) Armand singing to both Marius and Louis. Marius in the past tense, Louis during the 77 years of pleading for genuine connection. (Also doll motif.)

He will never be truly loved. Witnessing LouStat is witnessing Heaven from his own personal Hell.

A song I would choose for myself... It can be daunting to sum myself to a singular tune, but I could give you my best choice. Perhaps Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2? So much longing and hollow aching, a want for something beyond what you have felt for yourself. I adore the perfect harmony of the orchestra.
