fic title: everybody poops
âCome on, come on, you gotta see,â Eldin says to her the moment she walks in the door.
If she werenât so tired and sore and heavy and, well, pregnant, sheâd bite his head off but instead she just scowls and says, âCan I at least take off my coat first, jeeze!â
âIâm surprised you can put it on, frankly,â Eldin says.
Murphy narrows her eyes at him in warning. He raises his hands, steps back. Heâs got paint on his sleeves. Brown paint.
She does take off her coat, kicks off her shoes, goes into the kitchen to eat a snack which turns into her horking down half a pound cake, goes pee twice and then finds Eldin.
âOkay, Iâm ready, what did you want to show me?â she asks.
He grins. âI finally finished the mural on the nursery ceiling.â
She feels her chest pull tight, something warm fluttering inside. âDid you?â
âYeah,â he says. âCome and see.â
He helps her up the stairs. Doesnât touch her but hovers behind her so that she wonât fall. Part of her wants to make a snide comment about not being an invalid but a slightly larger part of her is just grateful.
The door to the nursery is closed.
âYou said you wanted something literary,â he says. âA classic. Now I donât usually like to be put into a box, I donât like rules or regulations, I donât need the man stifling my creativity, I donât-â
âEldin!â
âBut I think with this modern classic, we found some common ground,â he finishes. âGo on in.â
So she does. The room smells of fresh paint. The windows donât have curtains yet and the crib is leaning against the wall, still in pieces. Frank had promised to come help her put it together but they havenât found the time yet. She reaches out, flips on the light and looks up.
âOh, come on!â she exclaims. âWhat the hell classic is that?â
Eldin tucks his hands into his pockets and grins. âEverybody poops!â
