"I need you." Bull looked up, startled by the words, and the commanding tone they were said in. Rennak was standing there at the foot of the stairs, meeting Bull's eye with a glare before they headed up. All Bull could do was mutter a curse under his breath as he followed them, trying to ignore Krem's snicker as he passed him by. Rennak was quick on their feet, far quicker than Bull had given them credit for. By the time he reached the door to his room, Rennak was leaning against the wall as if they had been waiting more than just a few short moments. "Good, you came." Bull sighed, stepping past the dwarf to unlock his room. "Mind telling me what all this is about?" Rennak gave a huff of laughter, raising an eyebrow as they followed Bull through. "If you can't guess, we need this talk more than I thought." "So it is about Rocks," Bull said as he sat on the edge of his bed, keeping his eye on Rocks' legion friend. They nodded, pulling the chair away from Bull's desk to sit on it backwards, crossed arms resting on the chair's back. "It's always about Rocks. She's salroka. You know what that means." "I do, but usually the 'you hurt her, I'll hurt you' conversation comes before... Things get serious." His response was met with a slight shrug. "Before, she hadn't gotten herself more fucked over, with your urging. An ancient well, that's fucking with her head more than that mark does? And you- you saw what it's done to her. Now, I'm not going to say I know what's best for her. But you might rethink it if you were thinking it would comfort her to get out of her own head. She's hardly left in as is." "Rennak-" "I know, the sex stuff is none of my business. But if something goes wrong and she ends up broken because of it... Just be careful, please." "That I can promise you. She means a lot to me too, you know." Rennak gave one final nod, pushing themselves out of the chair. "Good." They made their way to the door then, only pausing briefly before they left. "And Bull?" "Yeah?" "You should stop pretending you don't know she can't read."
Rocks woke with a start, gasping for air, hand reaching under her pillow desperately searching for- for something, but her fingers came back empty. It took her a moment to realize why. She wasn't in her almost-too-soft bed, full of pillows and blankets, she was curled in a corner of the downstairs hall, surrounded by the almost hum of stonework, a jacket far too big to be hers bundled under her head as a pillow. She didn't need to take a deep breath, open mouth pressed to the fabric, to know whose it was, but she found herself doing so anyways, letting the musky smell help the stone's hum in calming her nerves. "You good now?" Rennak's voice startled her into sitting up, clutching the jacket to her chest, though she'd deny it if they dared mention it. "I- you woke me." "I came to raid the cellars for something stiff. I didn't expect to find you in a nightmare." Rocks flinched at that, pulling her knees up to help hide behind them, pretending it was just because she was cold. "You heard about adamant, I take it?" They nodded, leaning back, legs crossed in front of them. "Heard the part of the fade you went to was controlled by fear. Doesn't sound like a good time. Especially when you went there not two weeks after everything in the deep roads." "Oh come on, it's not like we ran into a broodmother," she replied with a forced laugh, eyes focused on the jacket now draped over her knees instead of meeting Rennak's eye. "No. But you ran into those sha-britol. And something that shook you like I've never seen, Rocks. We spent ten years in the deep roads, and trouble sleeping was never your thing." Rocks gave another huff of laughter, lifting her head so she could roll her eyes at them, casually giving them a two-fingered salute with her marked hand. "Up until this past year, I didn't have to deal with dreams while I slept. Or nightmares. Makes me miss the good old days of hoping you didn't swallow the darkspawn blood, and drinking until you were numb, just in case you had." They pushed themself up, raising their hands in slight surrender. "Alright. I'll stop trying to help. But you should talk to someone about it, Rocks. If not me, maybe that giant of yours. Though you'll have to face the sky to get to him." "Rennak-" "He wanted to leave you a note, to come see him when you woke. For some reason he doesn't know you can't read. I told him I'd check up on you when I came down for that bottle you promised us." With that, Rennak turned, giving a way over their shoulder as they ducked into the liquor cellar, leaving Rocks alone, still curled in the dim corner she had been sleeping in.
