Although being young, I am so happy that I have been able to have see him work in the studio, to hear him laugh and talk about the artworld when he was on the top of that world. If one living artist had any impact on me, it was him. Sadly in 1987 at the age of 37 he was affected by brain aneurysm from which he never fully recovered. He was not able to work for 20 years but since 2005-6 he slowly started to make some works again. Every artist, collector, art lover must see the documentary 'Memoirs of a Forgetful Person'! Six years ago the Van Abbemuseum and Museo Reina Sofia organized a great retrospective of his work, curated by Roland Groenenboom. Now Devrim Bayar did with - Fragments from an Unfinished Novel - a superb job at Wiels. Go see! This specific work was also part of his first US solo show in New York with Metro Pictures. Poetry had a big influence on René Daniëls work, and he referred often to his paintings as 'visual poems'. ALZUMEAZUME is an anagram of 'la muse s'amuse' (the muse amuses itself). Here the artist is depicted as a magician performing a trick. Magicians and good artists have much in common; both can make things appear inside empty boxes and generate amazement without revealing the effort. In the early 1980's, Graffiti Art came over to Europe, and was picked up by the artworld. As a counteract René Daniëls, together with 3 fellow Dutch artists, founded the - Spray Armee -. With there punk motto, 'what they do, we can do that too and even better', they made fun of it.
