Friendly Reminder about Religious Freedom and Catholicism
Religious freedom is not inherently wrong in of itself; it’s necessary to an extent because we need to be able to choose freely how to serve God and pursue truth. Choosing to love God, to pursue His love through religious constructs, must be an act of free will.
Ideally, we would live in a world where everyone wants to pursue what is true. That isn’t the case, however, and in order to choose what is true, we must have the ability to choose what is not true.
What religious freedom is NOT is the relativist idea that all religious institutions are equal or that they all are pathways to Heaven. This has never been the case and never will be the case. There are some religions that hold bits of the truth, but not its entirety. Some of them are just plain wrong.
The Church has never once taught that this is an acceptable understanding of religious freedom, as we believe that the only way to salvation is through the Catholic Church. To teach otherwise would be to violate a doctrine held from the Church’s beginning, taught to us by Christ Himself. Other institutions can lead someone to a life of holiness, yes. They can (and do) lead people to Christ and His truth (see any convert to Catholicism via some Christian denomination or other religion entirely). But the Church’s view on religious freedom has never been a declaration of religious equality, and it never will be seen as such.

Although well-meaning people try to claim all religions are equally true, this is difficult when you look at the details. For example, the Quran says ‘God is only one God, He is far above having a son’ (Sura 4:171), while the Bible sees God the Father saying to Jesus ‘You are my beloved Son’ (Mark 1:11). Other religions would claim there are many gods or no gods. But they can’t all be true – where religions flatly contradict each other the argument that they are equally valid falls down.
