Hi liking problematic characters is totes okay. Just pretendin theyre not is when it gets a bit hmm. I mean going out of your way to excuse & defend cuz you cant just say "damn that's a shitty thing but I still like them." When you just gotta whitewash or ignore it so you dont feel judged for liking a problematic character. And when loads of fans do it then sorta normalizes that shit in fandoms. That's not okay imo. Liking and owning the truth harms no one. Lies, defending & normalizing does.

Where is this message coming from? Is it because of that post I reblogged that said âliking good characters =/= being a good personâ, because if so thatâ is 100% not the point of it. I mean, honestly, you lost me at whitewashing (âwhen you just gotta whitewashâ???????????????????? What are you talking about?).Â
Like, Iâm sorry, but Iâm having trouble connecting this to the one sentence long post that I reblogged. Of course it is important to not defend/normalize things like abuse, whitewashing, etc, and literally no one was saying otherwise.
The point of the post was that some people in fandom go out of their way to say that they donât like characters that are problematic. Or *anything* that is problematic. And then use that feeling of superiority to bully other people, to the point where they think itâs okay to wish those people harm. People like this equate the number of âgoodâ characters they like with their own morality; and then think it excuses them when theyâre beingâironicallyâtoxic towards those âother peopleâ who may enjoy the villain of the piece.
Also, to be completely honest, yeah someone can just go âdamn thatâs a shitty thing, but I still like themâ and go about their business. No one has to write a whole damn thesis paper on why they like a character. So long as they donât defend what that character is doing, then literally who cares? You canât dictate how other people consume media and trying to do so helps no one.
