I saw a post on Twitter about tsumugi being more blunt or slightly (in a veiled way) teasing Eichi and Rei as a sign of his closeness/dependence on them, using the word "Amae" (甘え), and I thought it was interesting, considering how much this seems to show up in Tsumugi's personality and considering his neglectful childhood. He tries to make up for any ways he depends on people by overcompensating and doing extra for them, but with the people he really trusts, especially his older friends, he shows more of that "I depend on you" or "please be nicer to me" side that he becomes numb to around most people.

(I know Takeo uses this to explain the foundations of relationships in Japan and the societal reason to please others, the tag here is literally "tsumugi syndrome" what did you expect)
