New Indoor Golf League Launching in 2025
A new professional golf league with high-profile backers will launch in early 2025. The TGL, a six-team league with a unique format blending simulator and real-world golf, will begin its inaugural season on January 7, with matches broadcast in primetime on ESPN in the United States and Sportsnet in Canada. PGA Tour legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy head the league via their investment arm, TMRW Sports, while other notable investors include Justin Timberlake and Steph Curry.
The league delayed its January 2024, but the roof of its home stadium (SoFi Center) collapsed two months prior, causing a year-long delay. The six teams (Atlanta, Boston, Jupiter, Los Angeles, New York, and The Bay) will have four PGA Tour players and compete for $21 million in prizes. Woods and McIlroy will play, and so will pros like Sahith Theegala, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, and Max Homa.
The arena set-up includes a 53x64-foot golf simulator screen, about 24 times larger than the average simulator, and seating for 1,500 fans. Players will hit from real-grass tee boxes 35 yards away from the screen and continue to play into the screen until their ball reaches the boundary of the "Greenzone," where they will then pick up their ball and play on a real-grass putting surface.
The league designed several holes. Matches will also have a unique scoring format, played on just 15 holes instead of 18, with three players per team playing alternate shots in holes 1-9 and one-on-one matches in holes 10-15. There is also a 40-second shot clock.
