Welcome lords and ladies! Welcome to my humble abode. Though not literally an abode, more so a simple Tumblr post. But let’s pretend... This was all started by a simple ask (x) from a dear follower and I must say just how much I agree with them! Regency writing can be difficult to write about, even fanfiction can be a problem if you do not know what you are writing about! For me, a summary like this one is not needed because I sucked in everything I could about regency and its rules due to the extensive research I did, but for a reader who is looking to simply visualize works without meaning to do so much research like I did, my work might be confusing to read. Like for example: what in the world is the difference between a chaise and a coach? Why not simply use a carriage?! That’s why here you will be able to find definitions for words that are highlighted in my one shots! I’ll go as far as to always link this post to the words; all with the meaning to make things easier for you so you do not have to switch between Tumblr and Google all the time. Feel free to reblog this post if some words can be found in your stories too. Most of these definitions were found on many regency websites during my ventures into regency itself! This is a three part series for Anthony I named ‘The Deed of Right and Wrong’. The novelette revolves around Anthony and a Marchioness whose romance bloomed long before she was introduced to Society. In the Season of 1813, Anthony realizes that he can’t stand the thought of Reader being married to someone that’s not him. The obstacles on their way to a happy ending are what make the three-parts so entertaining and interesting. Plus Grace, but you’ll see her in part II. ;)

For every unknown Regency word or expression, you can check out my ‘All things Regency’ post in which I break down those expressions in order to make reading my Bridgerton fics that much easier to read and understand. These works (and my past ones too) are based purely off of the show and the research I did. I have not read the books so I apologize if not everything is 100% canon.

MASTERLIST 

It is not made up, but it certainly is not common either. More so just unusual. The behind the scenes got very confusing at one point during my research, so I’ll try to explain it the best in my ability. I’ve written a short explanation in the fic too but until I post it, this will have to do I’m afraid. I’ll be throwing in a mix of copied text and my own words to ensure I have been successful in concocting an alright explanation.

In the show, we can see that upon Archibald Featherington’s death, the estate does not go to Portia or any of her daughters. In season 2, we will be seeing the distant male relative to whom the estate was left. Why? Most peerages of England were created by patent and limited to male descendants, unlike with Scottish peerages and English baronies, in which it was more common for the title to be inherited by "heirs whatsoever" or "heirs general", which could include daughters.

However, there were some peerages which could be, and were, inherited by women. Ergo my fic. This was made possible by a special condition put into the original patent, though parliament had the right to amend such peerages, as well.

The prime example of that I found through the 1st Duke of Marlborough's eldest daughter. It was perfect for the fic, so I just went with it. “The 1st Duke of Marlborough's eldest daughter, who inherited her father's peerage (via Parliamentary and royal warrant), was Duchess of Marlborough in her own right. But before her father died, she was not Lady Henrietta "in her own right." She was Lady Henrietta by courtesy. When her husband became the Earl of Godolphin, she was the Countess of Godolphin by courtesy (even though she was then called a "peeress"). Her husband, the earl, did not become Duke of Marlborough by courtesy; he remained a mere earl (much like the husband of a queen is not a king by courtesy)-- husbands of peeresses in their own right are not granted the use of the title for themselves. When a woman holds a title in her own right, she is said to be, for example, suo jure Countess of Mar.”

The title Suo Jure meant "in their own right". The title belonged to them and was inherited by and through them, not their husband. Unlike a one of courtesy in which a woman inherited the title by marrying or being a daughter of a noble with a title.

Seven Duchesses in their own right were created between 1397 and 1820. Of these only one title survived to the Regency period, and it continued through the male line only.

By the end of that fic Benedict won’t be the Duke of Surrey, and I won’t be going into detail, but I’ll ensure that it is as historically accurate as possible.

Have faith in me! This is a whole ride, and the reason why I’ve been so slow in writing Bridgerton fics. I never do things half-assed, and that’s why it takes a day to research and then a few days to write. Why? I find it that setting is of far more importance than dialogue. Don't ask why, I just do. When you read my Bridgerton fics, I really want you to think “Wow! She really put in a lot of thought in this. It really belongs in that era.”
