It is absolutely absurd that in South Carolina — and across this country — ordinary citizens can’t build a room addition, put up a shed, clear land, or make changes to their own property without permits, public notice, zoning hearings, neighbor notifications, inspections, and endless government oversight… yet counties, cities, and municipalities can secretly negotiate massive data center projects behind closed doors under non-disclosure agreements.
How is it that homeowners are expected to operate with transparency, but elected officials and government bodies can hide billion-dollar infrastructure deals from the very taxpayers they represent?
If a project is going to affect power usage, water resources, land values, roads, noise, environmental conditions, or the future direction of a community, the public should know BEFORE deals are signed — not after the contracts are done and the decisions are irreversible.
Government officials are supposed to represent the will of the people, not shield corporations from public scrutiny. These secretive NDAs between municipalities and developers create a dangerous double standard that undermines trust, accountability, and local democracy.
At some point, South Carolina lawmakers need to address this issue directly. Public business should be public.
