That "what makes Nyx look like Nyx" post was amazing! Could you do one for Luna as well?
Hi anon! I actually didn’t think people would pay too much attention on that reference tutorial post so I’m surprised xD.
Anyway, looking at Luna’s reference pictures, it’s pretty clear that she always carried that soft and delicate look. I keep those two words in mind whenever I try to draw her. Please note that my drawings of her are a bit inconsistent but of course I always try to put a lot of features that are consistent. And I always refer to her Kingsglaive look out of preference.
So… what makes Luna look like Luna?
Here are the features/characteristics that I see right off the bat:
*correction: the jaw is a little squared but not too obvious
I also forgot to indicate that she has faint freckles on the bridge of her nose. Very faint tho, so I usually don’t bother putting those into the drawings. But looking at this now, I feel like I should next time.
*correction: longer that than it really is (I was writing so fast i made errors LOL)
Admittedly, Luna is easier to draw compared to Nyx. Her features fits the more cartoonish / anime style and I used to draw a lot of anime before.
Now as you can see on the drawings I’ve made of her (and same goes with how I draw Nyx), I don’t include all of the features I’ve listed down. I just put enough that would make her look like Luna and incorporate my style.
Again, it takes tons of reference observation and practice to get her face right or any character for that matter.
I hope this helps! :)
Using a cheap plastic “diamond” on a ballpoint pen as an art reference:
The first three photos show how the angle of the gem can make it switch between almost colorless to completely teal colored. Note how the color of the carpet in the background is clearly visible in most parts of the first image, but there are teal color along the edges close to the metal hooks(??? Idk what theyre called). The middle image has the gem with a strong highlight and color matching the placement of one of the supporting metal hooks that holds the gem in place. In the third photo the gem is angled with the top facing the camera which makes the gem almost completely teal colored.
These two photos show where the background color show through in the gem.
Similar demonstration as the previous two photos. But with the gem angled so the top face the main light source. Note how one of the metal hooks behind the gem is clearly visible here in the second image.
And finally here is the difference of the gem in direct light versus when it is under a cast shadow. The main difference here is that the bright highlight is gone and we are left with just the secondary light sources reflected inside the gem.

A recent commission. It's been sometime since I have had the chance to do one of these character concept thingy. With commissions where the client gives me a lot of creative freedom I like to make ...
