Mary Sherman Morgan
(1921–2004) Chemical engineer
Mary Sherman Morgan invented Hydyne, a liquid fuel used to launch Explorer I, the United States’ first orbital satellite. During the second World War she designed explosives for the military, later joining Rocketdyne where she was the only woman among 900 engineers. When Rocketdyne was granted the Redstone rocket contract, Morgan was named technical lead.
