Several years ago, my friend Toshiko gave me seeds of this shiso when I was visiting her (and hundreds of gardens) in Japan. It was November in Kyoto, and exactly the wrong season to find the seeds in shops. I had tried to find exactly this colour and crunched-up leaf, but had no luck. Then one day, after visiting a few temple gardens and going out for lunch, she passed me a little homemade envelope, and smiled.
