I used to think it was me, that there was something wrong with me, that somehow I wasnāt good enough. Ā Itās definitely the scars of the past creeping up. I think itās the illusion of real that darkens it every time.Ā
But now, now I am beginning to get it. I can crush my ego back into a can. Ā Itās not about me. Ā Itās about other people. Ā The thing that sucks most, I think is being made to feel so insignificant and unimportant in someoneās life. Ā
In the past year, I have had 3 people I consider friends just disappear into nowhere. Ā No texts, no calls, no emails, no responses. Ā
I read something so beautiful the other day, wishing at least one of the 3 would return to say at least some of these things so it wouldnāt feel so sucky. Ā But they wonāt. Ā It said:Ā
These are the things I wasnāt brave enough to say to you, even in text.
I didnātĀ lose my phone, or your number or track of time. I can assure you there is no message mysteriously stuck in my outbox, justĀ waiting to be sent. There was no family emergencyĀ and Iām not just āworking through some stuffā right now. I am not too busy at work, or out of credit and I have good service.
I have made the regrettable, yetĀ conscious decisionĀ not to contact you anymore.
I have all butĀ convinced myself that being openĀ and honest would only hurt your feelings, even though I know itās a lie. I know that whatĀ Iām doing is not fair, but right now, my fear is stronger than my guilt.
I never set out to hurt you, but suddenly, I can see no other ending to this story.
You arenāt imagining things.
There was a time when things were good, even great. We did connect. I did really like you.
The smiles, the jokes, the funāthey were all real.
But then, something happened that made me realize weāre not quite compatible.
I wish I could tell you that itās not your faultāthat thereās nothing you could have done differentlyāthat the problem really isnāt you.
The problem is that I believe we want different things. I canāt quite put my finger on it, but in my mind, we seeĀ the world through different glasses, we speak a different language and we live in different futures.
I know you must think Iām an a**hole for what Iām doingāthat Iām stonewalling you because I donāt care about your feelings. In truth, Iām simply scared. My emotions make me so uncomfortable, that when I try to express myself, my words get tangled.
I am worried that if I attemptĀ to tell you how I feel, I will accidentally say the wrong thing and offend you.Ā If only I was willing to endure that one, slightlyĀ awkward conversation, Iād save you months of frustration.
Instead, I have chosen to withdraw.
I will lock up my feelings, as I always do and pretend they donāt matter. I will ignore my guilt and tell myself,Ā this is for the best.Ā
I know itās too late, but, Iām sorry.
Iām sorry for putting my own emotional welfare ahead of yours.
Iām sorry for dragging you behind me while I try to make my cowardly escape.
Iām sorry for making you feel like youāre going crazy.
And finally, Iām sorry for ever giving you a reasonĀ to doubt yourself.
The way I have triedĀ to deal with this situation isĀ proofĀ thatĀ you deserve better.
You deserve someone who is willing to say the wrong thing, to have the awkward, necessary conversations.
You deserve someone who isnāt afraid of their emotions, who is willing to be vulnerable andĀ share themselves completely.
More than anything, you deserveĀ to be happy. And while no one person can ever give that to you, you deserve someone who isĀ willing to do whatever it takes to help you find your happiness within.

Hereās the point. Ā Iām a person. Ā I may be strong but I have feelings. Ā About myself, and about you and things weāve shared in our lives. Ā I think about you and how you are, how your family is, and whether we will ever sit and just enjoy life together again. Ā Ā
You all know who you are.Ā
And perhaps itās best I listen to my heart, that knows I would be the one carrying the load of our friendship. Ā Ā But damn, it was good to know I had friends. Ā Even if you disappeared into yourselves every once in a while.Ā
Thank you, for slowly teaching me to leggo o my ego.Ā
