Someone explain the joke to me.
It’s not a joke so much as a really, really sad reference! The new Falcon airship mount is adapted from one of Final Fantasy VI’s story arcs.
Setzer Gabbiani, a famous gambler and pilot (after whom XIV’s Gold Saucer’s gambler glamour set was designed) had a female partner named Darill. Darill piloted the Falcon, which was supposedly the fastest ship in the world. During a particularly risky test flight, she sped ahead of Setzer’s Blackjack in an effort to go higher and faster than anyone had ever gone before. The Falcon crashed and Darill died, sending Setzer into a downward spiral.
Setzer restores the Falcon in the latter half of VI’s plot, and it becomes the party’s means of getting into and out of the final dungeon. The “I told you, didn’t I?” that’s referenced in XIV’s automatic letter is part of the very last line of dialogue in VI: “I told you, didn't I? She's the fastest ship in the world!”
