I had a question if you don't mind me asking since you're the only other Tales fan on Earth. I just snagged the Symphonia collection for PS3. I've played a bit of it like years ago, but the discs were in poor shape so I had to stop. How does Symphonia stack up against Xillia and Abyss in your opinion?
I beg to differ regarding my supposed singularity, but in any case, letâs roll! Such questions are always welcome. <:
For starters, let me say that I havenât played Symphonia at all, so all I can give you at the moment are my impressions and a good friendâs opinion on the matter, which I mostly agree with.
According to this friend of mine (who has played almost all localized Tales games, I believe), he likes Symphoniaâs story the best (this includes DoTNW). Coincidentally, his favorite Tales games in terms of plot are Symphonia, Xillia, and Abyssâin that order.
On a personal note, I have only watched the OVA for this, so my judgment may not be accurate, but based on what I do know, I think itâs one of the better Tales plots out there. My personal ranking goes Abyss > Xillia > Symphonia. Everything about TOAâs story is glorious, from the characters to the worldbuilding elements present. Everything has a meaning to it, and the amount of detail and thought that went into them is just amazing (like the name of the Sephiroth, Auldrantâs world history, etc, etc). I found myself enchanted by Xilliaâs story as well, though my main issue with it is how it felt rushed after Exodusâs true nature was revealed to the player (I hear itâs due to the fact that they had to speed things up a bit to make it to the 15th anniversary deadline, sadly).
Gameplay-wise, he says itâs very simple compared to Abyss and Xillia, though DoTNW is a whole new ball game and is much more complex due to the presence of âtwo main charactersâ by his word. His gameplay preference goes Graces > Xillia > DoTNW. Mine goes Xillia > Abyss > Graces. I really liked Xilliaâs Link system and itâs the gameplay I found myself the most comfortable with, in all honesty.
Audio-wise, itâs typical Tales fare, I suppose. But the tracks hit where they matter, boy oh boy. I still think Abyss has the best score, though. (Hahaha, score, get it? *shot for lame pun*)
Graphics-wise, I canât say I like Symphoniaâs style that much. Among the three, Xilliaâs undisputedly the one that has the most gorgeous graphics. You may or may not blame it on the graphics engineâs generation, I suppose.
As for my opinion, my impression is that Symphonia, Abyss, and Xillia are hailed as the âbestâ games in the franchise. Symphonia, I hear, is a classic, and is often referred to as the âFF7â of the Tales Series. My exposure to it is quite minimal compared to the average fan, having only delved into the OVA and the drama CDs, but based on what I do know, I think my impression is not far off the mark. Itâs a very touching story, and even if my experience with the characters is not as deep as those who played the game, I did feel a connection toward them.
So, about how it stacks against Abyss and Xillia⌠I think Symphonia can and will give those games a run for their money. Itâs a definite recommend, and I do plan to check it out as well, along with you guys! Well, once I have the time, that is.
