It was a cold night, much too cold for mid September.
He stood against his piece of shit truck, the rusted paint chipping beyond repair, the mirror that he had busted last summer in a fit of rage hung from its post-mocking his off set balance. Smoke filled his lungs, stalling there before curling around his nostrils and disappearing into the dark sky. Tonight the cigarette was especially tart, his jacket was too tight and his heart too heavy. With a packed bag in his bed and a wad of money under his seat he waited, waited for a boy who he feared would never show, for a home that he never had and a new start that he didn’t deserve. Richie waited for his future but he was worried his future would never come.
More than anything he wished to leave this place, the park where he had fallen head over heels, where he had confessed everything that he had been carrying on his shoulders for years on end. It was hours past time, and he knew it but there was something that kept him here, kept him grounded to this moment. It could be hope that ticked away at his skin, leaving bruises along the tender flesh. Or maybe it was sobriety that melted his feet into the pavement. Whatever it was-it was wearing thin with the inevitable rise of the sun.
With a heavy sigh he pulled his keys from his pocket, jingling them in between his fingers before turning towards his car. It was like waking from a dream, barreling into reality head first. A reality of abuse and neglect, of torment and anguish. A reality that Richie wasn’t sure he would be able to face again.
Staring at his steering wheel he began to weep. Not for himself-no that ship had sailed long ago-but rather for the boy who was shackled in his own house. It wasn’t fair but then again, when was life fair. Fairness was for the unqueer, for the primped and proper who accepted societies standards with their head held high and eyes closed. Derry was a hell hole, and it was sucking Richie right in.
The screeching of his passenger side door brought his attention back and he watched in awe as a scruffy little boy hopped right into the cab, a faint smile tainting his swollen lips. “Sorry I’m late.” Eddie breathed, shoving his backpack onto the floor. “My Ma, she-well she caught me trying to leave and yeah-”
He turned to face Richie, exposing a harsh red mark that crossed the length of his cheek. “She hit you?” Richie asked, already knowing the answer. A anger began to gnaw at his stomach, churning it into a unbreakable knot. “That fucking bitch! I’ll kill her, I’ll-”
“Richie.” Eddie hushed, leaning close and cupping his scowling face. It was a sweet gesture, one that stopped the rampage in its tracks and calmed down Richie’s soul. This is it, this was how it was supposed to be, Richie thought as he leaned into Eddie’s soft palm, placing a gentle kiss onto his fingers. “It doesn’t matter. Not anymore.” Eddie finished, his tone light and free.
