Armadillo part one.
Armadillo, 28th of September.
Jack pulled on the reins “whoa, there boy.. easy, that’s it.” Slowly patting his horse he looked around he seen folk walking into their shacks, and houses. The wind blew the dust over Shadows hooves slowly shaking his head as Jack came to a stop hitching just outside of Armadillo’s saloon. “Evening there partner” a stranger walked past Jack holding a bottle of whiskey. Jack tilted his hat looking at him as he walked on by. Jack let out a lady breath before walking into the saloon. Armadillo has not updated as such, compared to other towns and cities. The cholera “the blue Death” had cleared up, some folks had survived as they managed to get out of the town seeking medical help and living away until returning they had a weak heart but lived on in the small town of Cholla springs in the state of New Austin.
Jack has made his way to the bar placing some money down “whiskey straight, make it quick” Jack places his hat by his side on the surface. “I haven’t seen you before sir” the man poured Jack a drink “well, maybe because I try to stay away form these parts. How about that” the man looked at Jack resting his head on his hand “Wait, you’re that Marston guy. Yeah, I had a few marshals come in here. I over heard them and they mentioned a Marston, Jack Marston. You look like you fit the profile... here look” The man got out a tatted bit of paper, as Jacks face appeared on the paper. “See” he pointed as Jack seen he slowly put down the shot glass placing it on the surface. “You don’t say... how many lawmen? Did they look like they were from the city friend?” The man shrugged “I can’t remember but they seemed to ask a lot of folk around here questions. You see we don’t like trouble or like to talk” Jack wiped his nose with his sleeve “no of course not, sir”Jack looked at the photo eyeing it up looking around as it read “wanted, needed for
questioning” he had never seen anything like it. “Do you mind if I take this?” Holding it up near the man “no of course not, hey I don’t need it. I mean if you’re in some sort of trouble I suggest...” the man moved in closer “you get out of here, the state marshal will be returning in a few days” Jack laughed “sir, I’ve got nothing to do with the law. It’s probably one big mistake” Jack thought about changing his appearance as he walked outside the saloon. Stretching, as he was about the place the paper in his satchel suddenly a young boy ran up snatching it laughing “I bet you can’t catch me” the boy seemed to be wearing no shoes with ragged clothes as he sprinted around the saloon Jack raised his voice “hey, hey back here. Damn fool” Jack ran after him as he held out his hand “come on, stop” as the boy jumped over small hay stack over a fence into a little yard he sat down “Jack ran over the haystack “Jesus, I need to stop drinking. I’m only twenty years of age” he suddenly got to the little boy spitting on the slope leant over “boy, come on let’s make a deal. I was your age once” the boy laughed “once you’re about 600 years old” Jack laughed “oh no, funny one. Very funny, seriously give me it” the boy put it behind his back as he closed his eyes and smiled “you tell me your age and I’ll give it to ya” Jack looked around “okay, I am twenty. Now come on” the boy shook his head “you ain’t, lies”
Jack slowly held his hand out as a woman suddenly cane behind Jack hitting him on the head “what in God’s name are you doing to my son, get away” Jack flinched “what the” holding his hands up after touching his head “that hurt, I need my paper back.. ugh ma’am, he want away with it” Jack stepped back slowly before suddenly reaching a fence putting his hand on the fence behind him. “No trouble Mrs.. “ the woman folded her arms “it’s Miss, Miss fiddly. Well you don’t look that old. You must be in your twenties” as the woman looked him in the eyes. “And you are sir?” As he stood next to the boy. “Mr Marston, Jack Marston. Now can I please have that paper” the boy held it right “I want it though ma, please come on I was having fun” the woman made an angry face “give me that here, I’m sorry sir” she handed the paper over to Jack as he grabbed it putting it quickly in his Satchel.
“Look, I am sorry he’s just a boy he’s bored and doesn’t know right” as she clipped him around the ear. “Not to worry ma’am.. well I best make my travels” the woman walked closer to Jack “you best be careful there’s some bad men around these parts” Jack laughed realising he did not have his hat “my hat” putting his hand on his head “I can get it for you” the boy ran off as the woman raised her voice concerned “Danny come back..” as she seemed worried “he shouldn’t be going in there, there’s a gang at this time they will kill him or kidnap him” Jack looked at the woman “don’t worry, I’ll deal with it” Jack made his way to the saloon.
The Return, Part one.
Jack had left Blackwater 26th of September 1915. Jack travels from new York to L.A back to home, where was home Jack always asked himself but he returned back to Beechers hope. The ranch was how he left it, The wood started to age and the grass was growing longer in some parts short as the wildlife had ate it away. Jack spent his days writing books, as he traveled back to Blackwater the train pulled into the station as he took a deep breath and looked around..”I guess this is my stop” As the young man looked around wearing a smartly dressed suit and tie, walking off the train. Shadow had been left at the stable at Saint Denis his last stop before Blackwater, and then was ridden to Blackwater by a man that worked for a farm. Jack took a few steps carrying a old small trunk placing it on the floor. “ I guess nothing has changed, much” women walked past Jack smiling then putting their head down laughing.
Jack still wore his fathers hat, it had aged quite a bit but never went anywhere with it. Jack tilted his hat as he continued to walk with the trunk, the coaches pulled up “yes you young sir, how about a ride” Jack tilted his hat again “I’m not due to leave town until tomorrow, I’ll call you the stranger” the man lifted up his hands “if you say so..” and continued calling others. Jack spoke to himself walking towards the saloon..”I can’t face going back home” opening the doors as men and women walked in and out laughing and drinking nothing seemed to have changed that much as a man walked into Jack “watch it “ Jack looked at the man with a dark stare. “ maybe you should watch where you walk next time friend” the barkeep overheard Jack “you best watch your mouth “ Jack walked up to the bar placing down the trunk slamming money on the wooden top. “I’d like to rent a room for tonight a bath and something to eat and drink” Jack handed quite a bit of money over “this should be enough” the barkeep nodded cleaning the surface “hey ain’t you that Marston kid” Jack laughed as he asked for whiskey “give me a drink now, I think I need one” the barkeep raised his eye brows “sure, whatever you say sir. You’re paying” Jack washed back the whiskey placing the shot glass on the surface wiping his mouth as little drip of whiskey escaped the side of his mouth “oooo I think someone is new around these parts, you smell fresh, sweet too” the woman places her hand on his shoulder as Jack looked over his shoulder placing his hand on hers removing off of his shoulder “ma’am do you.. mind” the woman looked shocked “Jack, is that you ?” Jack looked confused as he stood placing his hand on his gun belt. “Do I know you” the woman smiled “it’s me, Fannie, I used to work as a maid here. What brings you back you seem different “ as she looked up and down at Jack biting her lips “I did not recognise you Fannie, you.. you look different “ Jack held his hand up calling for a drink for them both “the law has been searching around your ranch you naughty boy, what have you been doing” Jack didn’t pay and mind as he poured the drinks “after you ma’am” escorting her to the nearest table free up the stairs “law? Still trying to clean this town up” Jack laughed “they actually mentioned you.
They said about Edgar Ross dying, I never knew some bastard killed him well I think he deserved it apparently he killed John Marston “ Jack slammed the bottle of whiskey down “he deserved every goddamn thing that’s happened to him” Jacks anger came out as his face went a bit red Fannie seemed conceded “are you ok Jack, I am sorry I didn’t...” Jack lit a cigarette as he puffed “no it’s ok miss, sometimes I wish things were different” Fannie places her hand on Jacks leg as she winked at him. “You know I can make it all better my dear” Jacks eyes lit up “um, yes I mean would you like another drink ?” Fannie put down the bottle “are you some sort of alcoholic now, drinking more by the smell of your breath and cigarettes” as Fannie kissed Jack, he cleared his throat “sorry ma’am..” Jack was nervous as he smiled at Fannie, it went suddenly quiet as the law walked into the saloon “we’d like to ask a few questions, has anyone seem a young man named Marston, Jack we need to ask him a few questions” Jack over heard as he looked over the banister “I wonder what they want with you” Fannie looked with Jack as he stepped back “I have... no idea” Jack had killed Edgar Ross as he had spoken to his wife and Edgar Ross’s brother before killing him. He never mentioned his name but Jack had a look you’d never forget.
