Character Development asks
(the wheel had chosen Damian)
Oh man Damian has so goddamn many. At the very top of it, his greatest flaw in his relations with other characters is that deep down, when you strip away the rage and anger, heâs just a scared kid who wants to be loved unconditionally by his family. During his time with the League Of Assassins, he was raised in an environment where acts of brutality were rewarded with words of praise from both his mother and grandfather. Whether or not they intended this is up for debate, but that is the result nonetheless. He learned from a young age that the love of his mother and grandfather is only given should he do what they ask, hence his belief that familial love is conditional, and finite. Â
This, and a very strong sense of jealousy are, in part, why Damian was immedietly hostile towards Tim. He saw Tim not only as a thief who was stealing what Damian perceived as his rightful place as his fatherâs son, but he was also an opponent for Bruceâs praise. Damian lashed out in the way he was taught to and conditioned to from a young age. Â
This has, in my honest opinion, irrevocably destroyed the relation between Damian and Tim, as thereâs always going to be a very large part of Damian that sees Tim as having everything that heâs ever asked for, and the adoration and praise from Bruce that Damian wants so badly. And while not destroyed, this has also put a strain on the initial relation between Damian and every other member of the family, Bruce excluded, seeing them as competition in a similar way to Tim. Over time, this has died down, and he considers most of them to be somewhat close to him, even if heâll never say so.
