I believe the Yellow and Red Steve that make up Nightmare knew each other previously before becoming Nightmare Steve. Best friends? Lovers perhaps?
idk why but this kinda reminded me of the song "History Hates Lovers" since the situation is probably always described as the yellow Steve forcefully absorbed the red Steve, when it could have not even been intentional, and it was the increase of power from absorbing the red steve that made him how he is now

Dragons Journey AU: Dragonoid Redesigns 1 The Red Spotted Drake
Far in the deep caves of Dragons Edge lies a large kingdom run by the Red Spotted Drake (Captiosus Lacerta). These short tempered lizards can grow to stand about seven feet, and are known for ageing slowly the oldest known member of there spices being around 449 years old. There diets consist of meats and a many plants, however they are known to mainly eat fruits with there powerful beaks, said beaks have been known to easily break open coconut shells. While these humanoid lizards are known for being quite strong physically, they are extremely intelligent being the first species to discover and utilize red stone, even evolving to have there own red stone signal with their bioluminescent spots. It is with red stone that made there kingdoms evolve into extremely advanced safe havens. Because of this the Red Drakes have turned to discovering many different as a past time whenever it being exploring the vast world around them, discovering a more advanced state of evolution, or testing the limits of there power supply.
