If anyone is following the Red 3 discourse in the wellness community this is a really good breakdown of the facts surrounding the decision to ban it.
Major takeaways:
Zero studies showed Red 3 was carcinogenic in humans
Very few food products actually use Red 3 (most of the lists Iâve seen have products that use Red 40, a different additive)
Comment: this hyper focus on food additives is not actually helpful for the health of the public. Food additives are rigorously studied by many major public health administrations world wide. If they cause negative heath effects, they will be discovered and banned. The push to remove all additives, including vitamins and preservatives, just serves to make food less accessible. Our time would be better spent addressing how much of the US lives in food deserts and how many people donât have access to minimally processed foods at all. We could address the fact many people donât have the ability to exercise and live under constant stress. Many people donât have access to healthcare. Food additives are a scapegoat and just serve to distract from actual systemic issues that exist.
U.S. regulators are banning the dye called Red 3 from the food supply. The move comes nearly 35 years after the dye was barred from cosmetic
U.S. regulators on Wednesday banned the dye called Red 3 from the nationâs food supply, nearly 35 years after it was barred from cosmetics because of potential cancer risk.
Food and Drug Administration officials granted a 2022 petition filed by two dozen food safety and health advocates, who urged the agency to revoke authorization for the substance that gives some candies, snack cakes and maraschino cherries a bright red hue.
The agency said it was taking the action as a âmatter of lawâ because some studies have found that the dye caused cancer in lab rats. Officials cited a statute known as the Delaney Clause, which requires FDA to ban any additive found to cause cancer in people or animals.
The dye is known as erythrosine, FD&C Red No. 3 or Red 3. The ban removes it from the list of approved color additives in foods, dietary supplements and oral medicines, such as cough syrups. More than three decades ago, the FDA declined to authorize use of Red 3 in cosmetics and externally applied drugs because a study showed it caused cancer when eaten by rats.
The FDA is taking steps to ban red 3, which is derived from oil, amid concerns about its health effects
Oliver Milman at The Guardian:
A red food dye that is ubiquitous in American drinks, snacks, candies and cereals may finally be banned by the federal government after years of concern that it has adverse health impacts, particularly upon children. The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that it could soon act to crack down upon the additive known as red 3, derived from petroleum and used to provide a cherry-red coloring to an array of foods.
âWith red 3, we have a petition in front of us to revoke the authorization board, and weâre hopeful that in the next few weeks weâll be acting on that petition,â Jim Jones, the FDAâs deputy commissioner for human foods, told a US Senate health committee on Thursday. Red 3 is used in nearly 3,000 food products, according to a database by one environmental health group, including Pez, Peeps, Betty Crockerâs products and Dubble Bubble chewing gum. Like other food dyes, it adds nothing of nutritional value and is used instead to add color to foods for marketing purposes. While the FDA said that this food dye, like other such approved additives, is safe to consume if done so correctly, red 3 has been found to be carcinogenic in animals and has been banned for use in cosmetics since 1990. Public health groups have also linked it to behavioral problems in children. Pressure is now building upon the FDA to ban the food dye, along with others that are routinely provided warning labels or are banned in the European Union â yet allowed freely in the US.
The FDA is making a move towards banning Red 3 food dye this is used in many foods.
Thanks for everything Tom, youâll be missed.
