Two other occurrences which fascinate me are as follows.
1. Creators adapting their own work. Like when Stephen King did ALL the cocaine in the world and made Maximum Overdrive, based on one of his short stories, or when Clive Barker directed the first Hellraiser film, based on one of his own novels.
2. Recursive adaptations. Adaptations of adaptations. Such as the novelization of the Silent Hill movie (which was itself loosely based on the video game series) or the Ratchet & Clank PS4 game which was based on the movie , which was based on the first game in the series.
Sometimes the two may even merge.
Idk.
It’s fascinating to see regardless.
