Kris Kross: “Warm It Up” (1992)
Damn. Remembering when this was the craziest-sounding thing ever to come out. Not from Hot 97 but from Z100 as they played it all as long as it was pop. “Warm It Up” falls within near the very beginning of making mixtapes off the radio, some which I haven’t heard in years. Which reminds me: I’ve been meaning to digitize my entire tape library. All 500+ shells. Maxells, TDKs, Sonys, and some Recotons, too. It will blow my mind, and also make me heartsick, to think back to an era and place I used to be a part of; one that’s far removed from where I am now.

Finally. As of tonight, each and every cassette in my personal dub library has been digitized. All 400+ of them. They'll be burned onto CD-Rs and backed up on multiple drives. Assuming that those discs are kept in a cool dry place and the files be moved over to new drives every few years, they can and will outlast the inevitable compositional degradation of the original tapes, which will still take a few more decades to run its course.
A great portion of my life and evolution of listening habits are all in these tapes. Radio dubs, tapes made from family and friends, found sounds, recording tricks, handwritten tracklistings - they're all here. Without Maxell, Recoton, Scotch, Sony, JVC, Fuji, TDK, Silver Shadow and others, this personalized music diary would not even be possible. No record-store victory tours, no WUSB, no music blog, no essential connections - nothing.

Recoton XR90 blank cassette
My ma’ and dad bought my bro- and I a box of ten Recoton blank tapes each for Christmas. I went through all of my ten in a year. Meawhile, my bro- never cared for recording like I did and left his Recotons lying around our messy house. I found seven of his that he never used and I ended up with 17. The other three? Two ended up missing forever and one snapped. It’s not a well-known brand in the states and possibly my ma’ bought them from the cheap-goods’ stationary where she used to work at, but they did come out better than normal.
Also: rainbow. LGBTA+ people, stand up and be counted.
It did it all.
