Manipulation Pattern: The Friendly Guilt Trip
The Structure: 1. Super casual opener (“Hey!”) 2. Makes their feelings your problem (“my biggest disappointment…”) 3. Acts like you’re overreacting if you notice (“I was just being friendly!”)
Why it works: Creates confusion by pairing friendly TONE with manipulative CONTENT You can’t win: • Comply = managing their feelings • Resist = you’re “mean” for not being nice back
Example: “Hey! I made an ethical choice and I’m disappointed you’re not accommodating it. Will you change?” Sounds like: Casual question Actually is: Moral superiority + guilt + pressure + built-in defense against being called out
Trust your gut when someone is “just being friendly” but you feel obligated/guilty/pressured.
That feeling is data.
