Steve leaves all the utensils by the fire pit, knowing Sam has much more experience at manning a grill than he doesâwhich is to say, no experience at all. Sam did show Steve how to turn the damn thing on, though he can say with certainty that heâd never try it alone, even if Sam did bring him a new fire extinguisher. Steve slips back into his kitchen to finish putting together the kebabs and almost doesnât hear Tasha follow him in over âGrill-Master Bartonâs Essential BBQing Tunesâ blasting from the speakers in Clintâs pick-up truck. âHey, need another beer?â Steve calls out over My Generation, trying to play off the fact that he was shimmying to it just moments ago. âNo, just wanted to help,â she says, washing her hands before sidling up next to him at the island. They poke peppers, zucchini, onions, and shrimp onto wet skewers in a companionable silence that lasts all of five minutes before Steve catches her sneaking glances into the living room and taking deep, measured breaths. âIs everything⌠Okay?â he asks, looking over at the nearly pristine room across from them. Tasha smiles at him, though it doesnât quite reach her eyes. âFine. Sorry. Must be allergies.â To what? The blankets and pillows had been put back, the floor swept, the rug vacuumed, and the coffee table in front of the fireplace had been wiped down with disinfectant wipes. Steve knows intimately what allergies look like, and that isnât it. He doesnât have to press her to explain, because she continues, arranging the kebabs on the tray with nonchalance. âHey, Brooklyn⌠You feel safe out here? By yourself?â Steve does his level best to keep from laughing hysterically. âI guess so,â he says mildly. âIâm getting used to the quiet, I think. No oneâs tried breaking in again. I havenât had to deal with coyotes or bears orââ ââWolves?â He turns to her, gauging her expression. Sheâs not smiling anymore. âI wasnât aware there were any in this area,â he says carefully, still fiddling with the food. âSam and Clint did mention some fairytale from town, though. Something about a werewolf, right?â Steve says as casually as he can manage, throwing in an empty chuckle. Tasha studies him for a moment, then takes his wrist, stilling his hand. âItâs not a story.â He freezes. With her other hand, she untucks her shirt from her jeans and lifts it up. Steveâs eyes are drawn to four long, jagged scars that run across the puckered flesh of her abdomen, faded with time but startling all the same. âTashaâŚâ he whispers, horrified. She drops her shirt and tucks it back in. âNot a story,â she repeats. âYou be careful out here. Promise me.â âI will,â he says quietly and tears his eyes away, balling his fists up until his knuckles go white.
