She didn’t understand what was going on with herself other then the fact that she couldn’t full stop. There was a pain that she hadn’t felt before and holding onto her leg and looking to the voice. This was the first time the small gem had fallen from Steven’s room to the floor below.

“...You’re not going to poof me? I attacked you, Steven, I slapped you five times!”

Pearl frowned, holding her hands close to her chest and clenching them nervously. She knew how badly Steven wanted to be able to handle these missions, how she was supposed to have faith in him that as a Crystal Gem, he could keep up with the rest of them, but it was hard. It was hard not to hold his hand and walk him through it, to not pick him up and carry him over every potential danger, to not leave him where she knew he wouldn’t be hurt. He had his own growing to do, but...Did it really have to be accomplished today? This year? This decade?

“It’s okay, Steven,” Pearl called back, doing her best to give him a reassuring smile. “I promise, you’re going to be just fine.”

But the tears welling in the child’s eyes stabbed at her chest, and after a moment of hesitance she added,

As Steven sat beside her, cuddled into her, happily cuddled against her, she felt safe again. It may only be for a few hours, or even a few minutes, but she fooled herself into believing that she was safe with him, that he genuinely cared. At one point, she near convinced herself that she was being ridiculous, that Steven wouldn’t be merely pacifying her.

He wouldn’t have been s willing to give himself up to save the Crystal Gems if that was the case....right? He had lay his life out for her to take, if it meant she wouldn’t hurt the others, keeping them safe in a bubble. She convinced herself of that until she realized that may be why he was fooling her, so she didn’t do that again.

The movie was getting pretty intense by then, the final battle coming to the end. She was pretty invested in it by then, worried that the hero wasn’t actually going to win - that wasn’t how it usually happened in actual life, after all.

With how excited Steven was, Jasper couldn’t help but be excited, too. This movie was so cool, not only that, but the popcorn had been great, now all eaten,and on top of that, she was happy again. She believed that Steven cared about her, she wasn’t just being pacified - 

Then Steven jumped up. She flinched away, before effectively leaping off the ledge that they had been sat on, clumsily skittering into the kitchen in a near-blind panic, slamming int the fridge as she tried to hide behind the counters, body shaking once she was convinced she was hidden.

It took her a few moments to realize what she’d done, even more fear gripping her chest and her body, and she barely lifted her head to loo at Steven, eyes wide.

She’d screwed up.

Steven was going to tell the others.

They were going to break her.

I’m actually going through some old things from school back on Providence.  I found my old speller and translation notes from when my teacher was forcing me to learn the native language of the Shadowspeakers for shadow magic studies.

          It wasn’t that Lapis couldn’t speak, she just refused to. Not even Steven could convince her to open her mouth and talk. But, well, she was willing to write.

          The ocean gem hesitated before taking the pen in her hand and turning the paper to face her. She struggled a moment-- not being very familiar with the written English language-- before jotting down two words in a messy scrawl.
