This BMW X5 came to us with an annoying complaint: whenever the vehicle accelerated, it would be accompanied by a clunky/shuddering noise. A bit of diagnosis showed us that the driveshaft center shaft bearing and the flex disc were ruined. What is a center shaft bearing? The driveshaft of a rear-wheel or a four-wheel drive is a precision-balanced component that supplies power from the transmission to the rear wheels. The two sections of the driveshaft are connected by a center support bearing, which is a metal bracket with a solid-rubber machined bearing on the inside. The bearing is designed to keep both parts of the driveshaft in place and reduce harmonic vibration as the vehicle accelerates/decelerates. What is a flex disc? A flex disc is a vibration dampener that acts as the buffer between the transmission's output shaft and the driveshaft leading back to the car's differential.
