Basically I went from “well, I’m not queer, I’m just an ally” to “well, I’m queer but not like, really queer” to “wait a minute, there’s a lot of overlap between people who think I’m not really queer and people who who think some of my definitely queer friends aren’t really queer so...maybe I should start thinking of myself as really actually queer?”
And it’s easier to argue with people than argue with myself. So I am arguing with people.
But I also feel hurt, because the more I hear people say I’m not really queer (even though it’s almost all second hand at this point from people who do think I’m queer) the more I feel like I’m not really welcome in the queer community. Which, uh, how did that even happen?
But the thing is, it’s not just people overtly saying that bisexuals (or trans people or asexuals) in opposite sex relationships aren’t really queer. That assumption is still heavily baked into queer culture. It’s about who gets represented *as* queer. It’s about how queer people are shown in queer contexts. It’s a mess, basically.
