Self-discovery... kinda
This afternoon, I was having a conversation with my brother about alternative realities. We touched up on what would have happened if my family didn’t move to Canada.
Here’s a brief history about my past self... I was a super athlete in taekwondo back in the day. Started at the age of 8, I would win either gold or medal in every single sparring tournament I joined. One time at the age of 12 I was at a local tournament here in Canada, I sparred with all the girls in my division and won. Since there was a low number of entries for the females in my division they moved me to the boys division. I won second place as a result and overheard one of my competitor’s father scolding his son for losing to a girl. I felt a little proud, tbh.
At the age of 10, my family migrated to Canada. I’ve repeatedly had a lot of “What if’s” going on in my head. Why did my parents move to Canada when our life in Philippines was better (in my opinion)? It wasn’t bad from my perspective, we were middle class. We had food to eat every day. I was a super star athlete. Why would my parents throw it all away and risk coming to a foreign land full of empty promises.
The only thing that Canada provided for us was free healthcare and a lot of discrimination. It’s a nation that makes you feel bad that you’re not white enough, tall enough, or can barely speak English. Ooops, getting a little sidetracked here... Let’s go back to the whole Taekwondo story hehehe
So my brother answered my question: What would have happened if we stayed in Philippines? To his answer, I discovered that we were offered scholarships left and right to different top-notch filipino Universities: FEU (San Beda), and La Salle just to name a few. That’s all. Hope this post doesn’t come off too cocky. Have a good day everyone and make the right life decisions!
