#Repost @deborah_annwoll ・・・ This week I read part 1 of #MatthewLopez play @inheritanceplay . My biggest takeaway from the first half of this beautiful epic is the importance of personal history and how that relates to cultural history. Which stories get told and which, conspicuously, don’t. It makes me wonder whose responsibility it is to tell these lost stories when the culture at large is too afraid or too prejudiced (same thing?) to do it. Must we always be brave, even at the risk of personal harm? Is it ok to want to shield oneself and be safe? it’s a reminder that risk taking often comes with privilege. It's easier to take risks when you have a safety net. Perhaps Art gives us a safety net of some sort. Taking these stories and making them “fiction” could lessen the risk, maybe. I love how this play keeps that conversation complicated. So far, it hasn’t answered any of these questions just posed them and given compelling arguments to both sides. Much of each argument is backed up by a character's personal experience, which is, paradoxically, inarguable. Fascinating.
