I ended up speed reading Royal Assassin these past few days to take advantage of a library loan and good lord did it feel good to power through a book like that. Royal Assasin had my rapt attention for long stretches of time, and once I reached the final stages I simply could not stop reading.

I think what impressed me most about this installment was the court intrigue, the layers of twisted schemes and the way everything was so tightly woven together. It is clear so much thought went into plotting and refining every detail, and I aspire to have that level of depth and complexity to my narratives… I really do have to constantly remind myself that such things are NOT to be expected in a first draft… but perhaps one day I can get there!

I also found the way the magic and the sharing of minds was depicted in this book very inspirational, and I think it was made particularly potent through the first person narration. Times where it became difficult to determine who was in control of the mind were fascinating and I definitely want to keep some of these techniques in mind for my own writing project - as the magic system I am exploring has similar elements.
