The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah is a story about love, surviving, and being true to yourself. Leni Allbright’s dad, Ernt, has returned from the Vietnam War. After being a POW, Ernt is finding it very difficult to return to the man he once was. Ernt can’t keep a job and is constantly uprooting Leni and her mother, Cora, while searching for his next big break. Bo Harlan, was a POW with Ernt, unfortunately Bo didn’t make it home. Bo has left his home, deep in the woods of Alaska to Ernt. The small community of Kaneq welcomes the Allbrights with open arms and teaches them how to live off the grid while warning them of the dangers of this new lifestyle. Leni and Cora blossom in Alaska- for the first time in a long time, they have friends and a sense of community. Ernt is a difficult man to love. He has nightmares from his time in Vietnam. Initially, Ernt likes Alaska, he enjoys the hard work that keeps his dark thoughts at bay. However, winter in Alaska is an unforgiving, harsh climate with little sunlight. The lack of sunlight agitates Ernt, giving life to his jealous, violent, paranoid side. Each winter Ernt get progressively worse and Leni and Cora are constantly on guard. Leni and Cora can feel the charge in the atmosphere whenever Ernt is near. All three have made mistakes, all three are stuck in this dangerous, lonely environment together. As Ernt’s instability grows, how far will Cora and Leni go to protect the other? Who knew inside their family home lurked more danger that the Alaskan wilderness? This book was fantastic!!!! Kristin Hannah does a great job exhibiting the many levels of love and loss. There were a couple of times that I had to put this book down because I was mad, but I couldn’t stay away- I had to know what was going to happen next. If you’re looking for a book with all the feels, you’ll love The Great Alone. Lock Every Door by Riley Sager is a story about survival and trusting your instincts. On the same day that Jules Larsen loses her job, she leaves her boyfriend. For the past two weeks, she’s been sleeping on her friend, Chloe’s couch. While looking in the wanted ads, she comes across an ad for an apartment sitter- though it seems too good to be true, she still submits an application. Soon Jules finds herself living, with compensation, in the Bartholomew- a prestigious apartment in New York City, that Jules and her sister once dreamed of living in. There are several rules that Jules must abide by to remain in good standing as an apartment sitter. Jules starts noticing strange occurrences around the building, but turns a blind eye to them until Ingrid, another apartment sitter, disappears. As Jules looks for Ingrid, she also starts researching the Bartholomew’s past- the more that she uncovers, the more danger she puts herself in. Will Jules find Ingrid or will she be the Bartholomew’s next victim? This was a good story with a surprising, yet maddening conclusion- some of these characters were jerks.
