A short list of my favorite responses from beta readers
“I would like to slurp up your writing style like spaghetti.”
“I am going to fill your shoes with legos.”
“WhY wOuLd YoU dO tHiS tO mE— (that’s a compliment. Please continue to do this to me.)”
“A little bit of torture. As a treat.”
“You seNT ME THE GOOD SMUT!”
“Horrible. Terrible. I love it. Give me more.”
90% of the time when I’ve sent someone a pre-read/wip link I end up sitting up in bed at like 12:27 AM cackling at the off the walls things that are sent back. And I love it.
Sometimes when I write it’s hard for me to actually process what I’m writing. If you read a handful of MIC stories you’ll easily pick up on my penchant for run on sentences, stream of consciousness during stressful scenes, or the choppy insert of a period in the middle of an otherwise normal sentence to denote where the POV or the reader would likely stutter or stumble due to the shear horror/shock/impact of seeing or feeling or hearing something visceral.
Those are great and fun and all but after you spend a week or more reading, rereading, listening to and picking over the same stuff, it can start looking very wrong. My current wip does need to cut back on the run ons, but besides that I saw the entire piece as just weird feeling and weird reading until I went through for an edit run and gave it out again and got some fun responses. I took a nap, a shower, walked the doggo and came back and read it start to finish again and found that my brain accepted the flow was indeed better. Because if two people said it was good then I guess it has to be decent at least!
Still no end on it yet and it’s gonna need a few more edit runs to iron out those outrageously just Extra sentences, but wanted to publicly acknowledge all the nice people here that are kind to me and help me out. MVPs of an already very MPV group. And thank you to any and everyone that reads and spreads the word of the weird and wild take of Modern Inheritance and engages with my whack brain going on benders!!
Cheers mates!
