Reactor Engineering (bio and chemo)

Goals of the course: be able to calculate conversions; the needed inflow of reagens; know the differences between and be able to compare batch, CSTR and PFR; be able to calculate the generated heat etc; be able to calculate growth rates etc in biological reactors.

What I like: I like to be able to calculate all that, and I’m especially interested in the bio reactors because there’s so much you need to consider actually.

Difficulties/what I don’t like: one reaction is okay, but for some reason I kinda panic when there’s parallel reactions/reactions in series (also because I didn’t have time (I estimated it wrong) to make the exercises on them).

Roll: I rolled with disadvantage  because of the time mismanagement, and the nine is a pretty accurate number I think. I don’t think I did really bad, but it wasn’t good either, so I think probably between 7 and 10.

Meet Alexander John Cruz:

1) What do you do?

I am a PhD student working on the industrially-relevant, upscale reactor engineering of the metal organic framework-chemical vapor deposition (MOF-CVD) process. With the ultimate goal of advancing the technique for sustainable materials manufacturing, we deposit MOFs on large-area substrates which will be tested for different applications including, but not limited to, photovoltaics, gas sensing, microelectronics, environmentally benign processing, catalytic technology, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals production.

2) Where do you work?

At the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis, KU Leuven Chem & Tech in Belgium.
