As summer forecasts heat up again this month in August, here in Somoma, master gardener & designer-extraordinaire Bonnie Walner encourages her clients not to give up on gardening, especially when it comes to succulents.

Apart from newly planted cacti and seedlings which do need care and attention, “it’s ok to neglect mature succulents,” says Walner. “They are naturally drought tolerant plants,” she added. “They are anything but dull; there’s so much variety with them that your garden will be enhanced by them.”

Certified as a Master Gardener since 2013, Walner prides herself in creating a garden that is an extension of one's home. “I enjoy being able to bring the outside in and the inside out,” she says.

Walner coordinates color and design that is sensitive to the environment and landscapes with drought resistant plants.

Each type of cacti/succulent responds differently to the amount of heat. “Obviously some more delicate varieties can’t handle intense direct summer sunlight for extended periods of time,” noted Walner. Yet overall, once the summer heat gets beyond 95 degrees a potted succulent should be shielded from direct sunlight.

Walner’s flare is with color, texture and movement. “Succulents lend themselves to creativity, that’s why I like working with them and sharing ideas and techniques with my clients and friends,” said Walner.

She can create a water-conservation-efficient garden with low maintenance that is timeless. “My specialty is creating gardens that are colorful, whimsical or peacefully natural,” she told the Sonoma Valley Sun recently.

As the intense heat continues Walner recommends using cacti/succulents instead of an over expansion of gravel or wood chips as ground cover.
