                    hal’s first instinct when he was hugged was the immediate urge to pull away. but there was something about wally that just ROBBED him of the ability to do so. something about wally just made him stay, and it wasn’t because he’d grown into the symbolic uniform of the flash. not because he was as great a superhero and a PERSON as barry was. maybe it was because of how long they’d known each other for, way before his hair started to grey, before coast city got obliterated and he became parallax. maybe wally had RECOGNIZED the way his gaze seemed to darken when he was deep in thought, when he was mulling over his past. when he was in one of his self-deprecating moods.

                   and just like barry would’ve done, he embraced him without warning. without asking for it. part of him wondered WHY wally chose to stick by his side despite all the blood on his hands. he’d even HURT him when he was parallax. he would never forgive himself for it, even if wally didn’t hold it against him. the only thing he held against him was the fact that hal had missed one of their monthly dinner dates, and wally’s own body in the embrace. ‘you looked like you needed one.’ that made his breath catch in his throat, made his eyes widen. “wally–” but the embrace tightened. became firmer. and hal only pursed his lips in response, deciding that the best course of action was to simply accept the hug. so he did, and before he knew it, his vision went hot with moisture. his jaw ached from clenching it so tight. and his returned embrace ended up with hal digging his fingers into wally’s shirt, the silence in the air punctuated only by the staccattoed gasps of hal jordan’s emotions being brought into the light.
