The air inside the temple proper was stale , mingling with hints of mouldy water and cracking stone . She assumed the old cistern had leaked into the complex somewhere ; circling rainwater and drainage through the fissures in the old limestone . Not unusual . Lara had seen enough self - sustaining ecosystems biologists would have gawked at to know they wanted as little to do with her as she with them .

Pulling out a new flare , the archaeologist paused . She’d already passed the grand mural ; if her research had been correct , she’d be flying blind from now on . Just as she liked it .
