apollo thank you so fucking much for being a reasonable normal person and making notes im serious. it's not even that the gameplay without them is hard it's just that order soothes my soul after three games of phoenix just Going To Places Because Why Not
[id: a screenshot from aa5, showing apollo explain his to-do list to trucy. end of id].
"this queer power ain't shit" *ten minutes later* "a night in the clink will ensure you will not succumb to temptation"
rant about aa5 under cut (i'm at the start of aa5-3 and outraged)
aa5.... really took all of the complexities and good food for thought that aa4 presented and ruined it completely, huh. the whole point of phoenix actually forging evidence in aa4 was to demonstrate the dark age of law as an era where you are forced to play dirty, because everyone else does it as well, and the solution to that horrible situation was changing the entire system completely. in the jury system, apollo wouldn't even be held accountable for presenting the forged ace, unlike phoenix losing his badge for presenting the forged diary page. in the jury system, the need for fabrications dissapears, because evidence is no longer everything, justice now uses common sense and a healthy amount of empathy hand in hand with reason and rules. so what the fuck happened in aa5?? the jury system is non-existent, the dark age of law is still happening, and what phoenix says is basically "yeah, under no circumstances should you forge evidence or play dirty, haha". no!! dig fucking deeper!! you scratch the surface of the importance of revolution and the understanding of good vs bad being dependent on circumstances and then you cover that scratch up with a slap of cement!!!!
and it could have been so good, too. with athena being an amazing addition to the legal world and with the orca case bringing a relatively refreshing message and with phoenix getting his badge back but being a mentor first and foremost. it could have been so good ghhhh
no apollo he called you a slut
playing the second case is ... well, it's something, so i'm putting my thoughts in a drafted post until i reach a stopping point or an image limit
you're telling me a queer coded this villian
and i do love how his beanix is showing here. "i have a feeling" sir you are making it look like you have prophetic visions
are these gay men about to be tragic. they are aren't they. i can feel it
like. i will be honest. i've seen some very vague spoilers about him being the phantom or whatever? and he does look like a dreamworks villian but it's so hard not to like him right now i'm serious

things i didn't know happened in aa5 part one: phoenix confusing a penguin for a chicken because of how hungry he (phoenix, not the penguin) is and then considering hiring birds as a marketing strategy
finished the second case of aa5 and i'm not going to lie it was stupid as hell and i did not enjoy the plot at all? the family themes in ace attorney are usually so nicely done but this whole "jinxie and her dad" business was just. eh. the possession thing they did with the defendant had no point to it and, honestly, very few things in this case had a point to it. the main idea is just "money make people go crazy" and as low as my expectations are for depth of a visual novel like aa5 it just isn't original at all and doesn't provoke too much thought. if i wasn't in it for the characters i would quit this game right now, but, alright, dlc case next, phoenix do your worst, and i will also keep doing my worst as the hater that i am
also, athena being the character that she is in aa5 was honestly a great decision. i'm only at the start of the game, but after kristoph's "emotional riff-raff" speech a young lawyer that has can read people's feelings and win cases with that ability (and is a very emotional person overall) is a pretty amazing thing to happen for the legal world of aa. of course, the better thing would be to, you know, make the jury system present in the later games, but i've already made my peace with that (lying)
