My thoughts: -
This is one of the most interesting books I have read until now. The plot is really refreshing, I liked how the whole situation with Tox (the disease) was explained. I found the author’s writing style lovely and tactile. Moreover, I thought that the concept was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and especially the characters. Also, the cliffhanger, Oh My God! that shit just messed me up. I hope the author releases the second book soon.
Plot: -
“Our side of the fence is neat and clean like it was before - it’s only us that’s different.”
The plot is refreshing and unique, but I think what really made me like this book was the author's writing. You can see how Tox had affected the girls in the first couple of chapters. How it affected not only their bodies drastically but also their minds. Another thing that I would like to bring attention to, is how differently Hetty and Byatt’s chapters are written. Hetty’s chapters are clear and precise. While, in Byatt’s chapters, words are not clear, sentences at times do not make sense, even the formatting isn’t right. That shows Byatt’s mental state.
Characters: -
“I closed my eye. I have to get used to it, to this guilt twisting inside me. I don’t think it’s ever going away.”
I found every character in this book complex, and Hetty is surely one of them. We see her taking decisions that are hard to take but she does anyway for survival and her best friend Byatt. Her motivation to find Byatt is destructive not only for her but everyone around her. But I think that is a very understandable trait as you can see these girls don’t have anything but each other. She is driven, focused, and hard minded but at the same time also is sensitive towards others.
“We don’t get to choose what hurts us.”
Reese is that character that you think you have figured her out but turns out she is completely different. I at first thought she is the one who is a completely detached person, who doesn’t want to mix up with people, but she actually is just a very emotional person who keeps herself away from people to not get hurt. I guess many of us suffer from that right?
“I think I’d been looking for it all my life, a storm in my body to match the one in my head.”
Byatt is the character I felt really bad for. I don’t think that any one ever deserves what she went through. She has a personality that anyone would admire and like instantly but she can also be manipulative, in a way that no one recognizes. That's what makes her complex.
So I would conclude this review by saying that if you love adventure, suspense, thriller, LGBTQ, all female books then there you have the perfect book. I think that no one should miss this. Let me know your thoughts about this book. Would love to hear them and also, any book recommendation of yours.
