Today I finished reading girl’s last tour

I never heard of the manga/ anime before, but few months ago my wife decided she want to collect physical manga, and conveniently girls last tour was realizing in German (German manga is much cheaper to buy then in English). So, she got all the available volumes at the time (3) and then every few months a new one once it released. I got to take the story slowly in. And was it a special journey...

Girls last tour is special. Its is a slow story, about the small things in life, a story about two cute girls, in a brutalist, apocalyptic hell scape. They might be one of the few last surviving humans on earth. Every day could mean death to injury, illness or malnourishment, but they find safety in each other and joy in the smallest things like finding chocolate, old camera, or a warm bath.

There is no overarching doom, or goal they have to rush to. It is literally the end of the world. They slowly travel to the highest point of the city, due to curiosity, not because they need to survive. They do things because they are alive, and are human. The manga explores topics revolving around music, art, human nature. Why do people start wars? Why do they destroy? Create? Survive? There is no possible way for those two girls, born into the end of the world to answer. (End like in heat death of the universe, not like end of civilization)   That makes the end even more sad for me... but I do not want to spoil what happens.

Girls last tour is a cosy, slow adventure. There is no action, or fights, but the story is still interesting.  I'm happy I didn’t get to read the series in one go. I had to take it slow too, as they did. And this story will stay with me for a while, there was a lot to learn from it.

Project: burning dvds

Storing the dvd: I was thinking for ages how to keep my burned dvds. I have paper sleeves, but they are impractical, I was thinking of buying plastic cases: but that would take up so so much extra space and this world has enough plastic junk. In the end I decide on good old DVD soft case. One day I want to get a printer that can print custom art on DVD. To make the dvd more interesting I made a little graphic to go under the disc. I'm really happy with how the whole thing turned out.

This is the complete box set of the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga. A 2 hardcover books, each around 500 pages long (original manga was 7 softcover volumes long).

Hard covers are probably my favorite way to read manga, the images are big, and easy to read. The first few pages are full colored artworks, including a map, printed on a nice glossy paper, while the rest of the book is standard mate paper. The box set also came with a double-sided poster. This deluxe edition came out in English in 2012, but in Japan already in 1996.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky Collector's Edition Blue-Ray + DVD set [2021]

The art books is a must have for fans of Laputa or studio Ghibli. You get insight for the second (but first official) Ghibli movie. Miyazaki compared those films in the book, quite a few times. This book is also full of concept art, character sheets, and techniques they used to achieve certain effect in the movie. Don’t forget Laputa is from 1986, long before Ghibli used digital animation.

My second priced collection is this collectable set. It comes with a Blu Ray and a DVD (both have the movie on it) with English dub, sub and Japanese dub, and a 5 post cards.

The Blu Ray has a lot of special content like the whole movie as a story board (full screen on in picture with the movie), promotional videos for the movie in America and Japan, Behind the Microphone interviews with American Voice actors, short interviews with Miyazaki about character design, making of the movie, etc., textless Opening and Ending Credits, TV spots, Original Japanese Theatrical Trailers and Collection of Studio Ghibli Trailers

The DVD comes with the same story board extra and Studio Ghibli trailer collection and has an option for SDH English Subtitles.
