I'm not saying that he didn't care about her, however, I do feel that it's alot more likely to have been a huge emotional upheaval of infatuation. A childhood of friendship isn't enough to magically fall in love after having not seen somone for many many years, because people change. 

I think He got flooded with emotions ( as did she) and had a rushing of childhood memories with Christine, in combination with the fact that he was so enchanted with her singing. I also feel like he dosn't really respect her.

 little lotte is a lighthearted scene where they recount their childhood memories, however, he's rather condescending with what he says. Obviously he's remarking how pleased he is to see that she's such lady now, but I think he see's her more as an object than an equal. If she hadn't blossomed into a gifted beauty, i doubt he'd think twice about her. Its kind of like the nerdy girl becoming hot when she gets into high school. They make no waste of time getting engaged , even if they were getting to know each other again.
