âLook I know itâs bad. yell at me about trust some more , go ahead. I donât care.â Rig spat, clenching his fists as he turned around to face the green sprite.
âBut did I do it? Of course I didn-! Gage?â Rig dropped his fists when he realized Gage was crying, something no one had ever seen, hell he wasnât even sure until now if it was possible!
âGage... what?â
âItâs my fault...Itâs all my fault...I let it in.â
Rig bent down to the spriteâs level,
âWhat?â The hybrid asked.
âBack in our cabinet. in Turbo time...I was tired of losing. Tired of being ignored and I was looking for a way to be faster, to be better than the others. mod I was so petty... I was looking for a way to cheat and I stumbled into a small bug of a virus and it bit me...I didnât think anything was wrong until my eye began to rot out and Our Turbo tried to help me. he fished out several strains of Virus infected code but I lost the eye... he was always so good to us and after that day he started to change, he became cruel, especially to Radio. I knew then he was infected. he wasnât our Turbo anymore and when our game was destroyed I knew it was my fault. I brought it in because I was looking for a way to cheat them... Rig, what does this thing need Radio for? Donât lie to me Iâve heard him called â keyâ before and I heard everything just now.â
Rig listened, slowly sinking down onto his heels.
âThe virus was young. it needed roots... itâs a parasite, it needed a place to multiply and grow larger. My guess is it was growing in you until your Tubro removed it, when infected it grew in him until Radio came to find out about it. When I came along the two were pretty much inseparable. they knew they would die and so dissecting themselves they planted the key codes for the Virus in Radioâs code and the locked launch codes in Turbos code. it needs both to be complete and until then it was vulnerable and Erasure could keep it contained but now itâs got everything it needs. âÂ
âRadio is tougher than we all give him credit for...â
Gage replied, hugging himself tightly.
âYouâll know when it wakes up. itâll take me first...if I start...turning into a giant bug monster youâll kill me, wonât you? I donât want Peeps to see it...I donât wanna be one of those things.â
The green sprite seemed to have thought this through, he knew what would happen to him.

Rig paced, feeling uneasy as Radio was never one to be late much less without notice.
âIâm going to go see what the hold up is.â
Rig grabbed up a scarf and headed out before anyone else had even gotten up.
about halfway to the apartment Rig was stopped, a large white beast.
It was Erasure.
âYOU HAVE FAILED, RIG!â The king boomed, bearing his teeth as he reared his head back.
âWhat? what are you talking about?â Rig yelped, putting his hands up.
âThe RED has the key! it will soon be fully restored and your world ended!â Erasure hissed.
âWHAT? HOW?â Rig was confused, everything was fine, he had fought so hard to keep the RED at bay.
âThe Key was left alone and the moment of weakness seized, how could you be so foolish? This is no mere Virus, this is a destruction without order, without consciousness or motivation. It cannot be reasoned with and it will not hear pleas of mercy. This monster has no core and it has only one purpose; to end the world we know and cripple the human world outside it.â The faceless beast actually sounded as though he felt fear for the first time.
âNow, because of your carelessness it will awaken fully and there will be no stopping it.â Erasure rumbled deeply as he turned away.
âWhat are you going to do?â Rig asked, trying to swallow the lump in his throat.
The beast paused, whatever rage and fight Rig had expected was replaced by the calm, and quiet tone of resignation.
âAll I can to prolong the life of those I value.â
The white beast slowly melted away to fortify his home, leaving Rig to wonder if anything could be done to change this terrible end that was unfolding. he bit back broken sobs and catching breaths as he ran his hands through his hair and tugged back on his ears.
âYou were supposed to kill Radio⊠werenât you?â The voice from behind him was small, soft, and uncharacteristic of its owner.
âGage?â Rig turned to see the green racer standing there with a heavy glitch breaking the silhouette of his face, it stemmed from his patched eye and pulled outward.
âWhat are you doing out here?â Rig asked, rubbing his nose on his sleeve.
Icarus watched Gage bark obscenities and bitter curses at Rig while he tapped the cooling coffee mug in his hands with his wedding band. None of this was right, this wasnât anything like he pictured it would be when he found Radio again.
He thought somehow they could go back to the way they were before⊠Before he realized how much things really werenât alright.
âGage, sit down, please⊠â
He told the Green sprite tiredly.
â Icarus⊠â Gage replied in a tone that carried a hint of hurt.
â Just⊠Let him finish. I donât think he meant to hurt us or even them, and while I agree with you that the lies and⊠How we all found out was⊠Not okay. Letâs just hear the rest of it at least.â Icarus was always the voice of reason, but he looked so tired, so worn and lacking in his usual air of strength.
Gage groaned although he accepted what Icarus said the only reason he complied and sat down was because he, too, was tired, and the fact Indie had been sobbing pitifully for the last hour had taken him down a few pegs. For as bitter a sprite as he was Gage really did not enjoy making his companions cry.
Rig, who stood in near the archway to the kitchen with his younger brother sitting behind him at his heels, had been quiet until Icarus spoke up.
âIâm not trying to defend what I did. I shouldnât have kept it a secret but I didnât know how to tell you all either.â
He started to explain, again, since he had been cut off so many times already he paused and expected another interruption. Thankfully Icarus reaching out to put a hand on Gageâs shoulder stopped him from ranting again about trust.
âI had been living in that game for years and I donât even know how long it had been infected before I noticed. The virus that infected the game is a parasite, it doesnât want to be found nor does it want to kill the hosts. â As Rig continued he could see Gage growing more and more upset and even physically uncomfortable.
â The bugs grow inside the existing sprites, slowly replaceing their code so they learn the way their host acts. Itâs an intentionally slow process to avoid detection. By the time I realized the game was infected the damage was too severe. Too much of the game had been replaced to be salvaged. I was only able to get most of the code for Nathan and the twins.â Rig normally would be pacing and coming undone by this point but Agent had a firm hold on his brotherâs leg.
âI honestly couldnât⊠Couldnât handle seeing them⊠You know⊠burst into monstrous bugs. S-So⊠I took their backups while Agent erased everything else. They didnât know what hit them and⊠and I donât think any of them suffered very long⊠Though I really canât swear to that and the backups I sifted through to piece them back together were taken prior to everything so they donât have to remember that⊠Theyâre about as alright as they could possibly be and they really didnât want this to⊠You know, get ugly⊠Like it did.â Rigâs hands were trembling somewhat as he lit up another cigarette.
Agent poked his head out from behind Rig and slowly stood up. âI⊠Didnât know⊠Donât knowâŠ. I - I never.. Hmmm⊠I have been- Been in a⊠box⊠I donât know - ahh⊠How not to Mmh, talk with⊠Others. I didnât⊠Didnât mean to say things- th- things that hurt. â
The hybrid spoke nervously and seemed to be genuinely apologetic. He didnât understand why he had made everyone so upset, all his life he knew that things ate other things, naturally and consistently, he was only ever told that was bad by Rig. He was a powerful destructive hybrid that had very little experience in social situations.
âI guess I canât hold that against you, Agent⊠But you, Rig⊠You still should have said something to us⊠To Radio at least. â Icarus finally spoke again, he was rubbing his temples while he processed everything that Rig and Agent had said.
â This⊠Parasite⊠Is there any way to remove it without a backup or destroying the host? â Gageâs question came with an uncharacteristically nervous tone.
âI⊠Donât think so⊠At least not that I know of. Believe me if I did I would have taken that route before considering the alternative. â Rig could tell, everyone could tell, that the topic had Gage very unsettled.
Though they seemed to understand what Rig was saying, what he meant to do, no one seemed at all relieved. If anything they all seemed sadder.
â Iâm⊠So sorry, everyone. Iâll do everything possible to make sure nothing like that ever happens again⊠I⊠I swear if I ever found more of it I would tell you all before doing anything else. â Rig tried to be reassuring but he wasnât too sure how well that went over. He smiled at Icarus who nodded back at him before he stood up.
Icarus then pat Gage on the back and moved to where Indie was sniffling and lifted his scrawnier twin up to walk him back oit to the small get-together tbey were having for the holiday.
âLook into other ways of getting rid of that Parasite virus for us, alright? â Gage asked as he stood up, patting the Hybridâs arm on his way out the green racer actually stayed by the twins.
Rig watched them for a few moments, it was the first time theyâd all been⊠Supportive of each other in so long it was a little shocking that they were all in agreement or at least on the same page for once.
Agent tugged at his brotherâs shirt and urged him away. âCome! Show me more the movie things, and⊠I want you to teachâŠ. Better words.â Rig gently pat Agent on the head, knowing that he needed to tell them so many more things. every lie deeper he went seemed another nail in his perverbial coffin⊠âHey, Guys?â Rig called into the living room and waited for Icarus to look up at him before he continued. âWhen is Radio supposed to be here?â Icarus shrugged, he hadnât even thought about it since before Agent had made a big scene of eating the game Rig lived in. âHe needed some last minute things for Christmas gifts so I assumed heâd be late.â âItâs⊠/really/ late now thoughâŠâ Indy added, knowing that Radio didnât like being out at night. âMaybe someone should go check on him?â Gage asked, unsure what Indy was implying. âDoesnât he still have that big jerk of a virus husband? heâs probably just running late, I wouldnât worry too much.â Icarus assured them all as he pat Indy on the back. Rig, however, was definitely worriedâŠ
