Day 1 of Trust Training
Trust training has gone well so far! I didn’t realize how much they actually didn’t trust me until today.
I got them all to easily come to the cage door for treats. With Mack and Ollie I could get them onto my arm and my knee. Unfortunately they realized they then had the ability to climb down and run around the bedroom. I haven’t yet figured out how to solve that problem. They love running around the bedroom, but I feel like they just stay away from us and we don’t get bonding time.
Mack wanted to run around so badly but I was able to block him off and keep him on my lap, distracting him with treats. He’s my most skittish rat but I’m so proud of how well he’s done today.
Surprisingly Nikko is the one that trusts me the least today. He was more hesitant to climb onto me than the other boys.
I figured out the progression I want to do.
From the cage:
Onto my hand Onto my arms Into my lap While being petted in my lap Picked up and put down in my lap Being held in my lap
And hopefully that will be a great start for all three! It's too hot to use a bonding pouch and they never stay put anyways, so hopefully the Ratoob I bought will get some great use later this fall!
