A Royal Soulmate Side Stories: Chapter 5
@rationallyparanoidâ: "I was curious what the glaives were doing/thinking whilst hunting for Prompto. I'd love to see how Tredd felt after having his gun stolen and then being shot with it. Bet he'll never live it down XD"
here you go, and here it is on AO3.Â
this was a great prompt for my bad mood. I love writing the glaives
They canât fucking find the assassin.
The best assassins in all of Eos, and they canât fucking find one guyâone! And heâs blond! He should stick out like a sore thumb in Insomnia! In all of Lucis even, it shouldnât be this hard!
But no. A day, two, and then suddenly itâs almost an entire week since the assassin escaped from the Citadel.
Drautos is pissed.
âHeâs a blond Niff is a sea of dark-haired Lucians,â the Captain says. âHow hard can he be to find?â
âWeâre trying, sir,â Luche reports. âHeâs skilled at eluding us.â
The Captain eyes him, and sighs. âI suppose a Resistance fighter who survived the Empire would be,â which is the closest thing to understanding that Lucheâs is going to get from Drautos. âBut we canât fail. In times of peace, the Kingsglaive still has its placeâbut we must prove it, and bring this boy in safely.â He drums his fingers thoughtfully against his desk. âHow have you been organizing the sweeps?â
âWeâve been going in a grid fashion, sir,â Luche says. âBut he could be anywhere in the city. We know he hasnât left the city due to the increase of guards at the border, but that limits how many we can send on sweeps.â
âThe city is a large place,â Drautos says, pondering. âLots of places to hide. Especially if youâre used to worse than ideal conditions.â
Luche waits.
The Captain continues, âAnd if youâre used to stealing to survive. We canât let this assassin have free run of Insomnia under our noses. Luche, get one of the recordings from when we brought him in, get me a good picture of his face, and letâs broadcast this shit.â
He startles. âSir?â
Drautos grins a bit viciously. âHe can run only where weâre not looking for him. So letâs get everybody looking for him. Itâll be like smoking him out.â
âBut heâs injured, sir,â Luche says. âDo we really want to⌠put so much pressure on him?â
âIf we donât,â Drautos says, âwe might just end up finding him dead in the sewers at the rate weâre going. We have to bring him in, and quickly.â
âŚ
Getting permission to post the assassinâs face on TV is a nightmare. None of the royals wanted their soulmateâs face as a wanted person on the news, but their concern for his well-being over-rided their fear of publicity. Remarkably sensible, for nobility.
And it works. To an extent. The fifth time the Kingsglaives are summoned to an apartment just too late to catch the guy some neighbor called in about who matched the photograph on TV, Luche considers asking the Captain to revise their approach.
âYou donât think heâs actually in the sewers?â Tredd asks, nose scrunched up as he pokes the manhole cover with his toe. âThat fucker already shot me, Iâm not going into a sewer for him.â
Luche thinks about it. âWe should consider it. It sure would be a place to hide.â
âBut the sewers?â Tredd asks incredulously. âWe know heâs staying in empty apartments as much as possible.â
âAnd to get to place to place,â Luche says slowly. âHe must be using the sewers and the subway to get around.â
Tredd snorts. âLike a fucking Niff rat.â
âTredd,â Luche says. âItâs the Princeâs soulmate. Be careful.â
âYeah, yeahâŚâ Tredd mutters. âHe shot me, with my own gun.â
Luche sighs. âGet into the sewer, Tredd.â
âŚ
They donât find the assassin in the sewer, which Tredd will never let Luche forget.
Nyx finds him, in an alleyway by some garbage, unconscious and feverish.
âI found him,â Nyx says over the comm. âI thinkâthis is him. Yes, it definitely is.â
âWait for back-up,â Drautos commands. âHeâs dangerous.â
âHeâs unconscious,â Nyx retorts because he never shows the Captain enough respect and that isnât going to change now over an assassin. âHe looks dead. He needs immediate medical attention.â
âUlric, wait for one goddamned second for back-up,â Dratos says, âthe others are literally a minute away, if you die over one minuteââ
âIâm checking his pulse. Iâll be careful,â Nyx says, and thereâs a brief moment of silence save for the Captainâs cursing where everything could have been fine, and thereâs suddenly a gasp and a thud.
âUlric, report,â Drautos hisses.
âHey, hey, easy,â comes Nyxâs voice, smooth and warm and not reassuring in the slightest. The Captainâs grip on his desk goes white. âI just wanted to check your wounds.â
It only gets worse from there. They listen, tense, as Nyx lets them know thereâs a gun held to his head by a delirious assassin. When Nyx orders the others who have caught up, because they were in fact, literally a minute away, to back off, Drautos says into the comms, âAbsolutely do not retreat. Take out the assassin before he pulls the trigger.â
âCaptain, if itâs held against his head, there wonât be enough time,â Luche says, trying to make sure this doesnât end with Nyxâs idiot brains all over the wall. No matter how much he would deserve that.
âItâs pressed up against his throat,â Crowe says, voice thin and tight. âI canât even cast a spell without the assassin having the time to get one shot in.â
Nyx is talking and talking, and all they can do is wait, and hope that theyâre not losing one of their own on a stupid domestic mission. Luche personally vows to kill Nyx himself when he asks the assassin, âAre you going to?â after the assassin says he could kill him. He can see the little half-smirk on Nyxâs face as he says it toâconfident, lazy, and more relaxed than he ever has any right to be. Â
âNyx, if you die, Iâm pissing on your grave,â Luche says, before he can think better of it.
âWe wonât give him a grave,â Drautos says, and Luche suddenly remembers heâs in the same room as the Captain. âWeâll string up his corpse as a warning to others.â
Nyx ignores them both, thanks the gods. He somehow keeps talking to the assassin, somehow charming him and likely making promises he wonât be able to keep.
Or maybe he will. He canât speak for the royalty though, and while Nyx thinks the best of them out of most of the Glaives, theyâre never beholden to the words of one of their weapons.
But it doesnât matter. They can lie to the assassin.
As long as they bring him in alive. When the weak and resigned, âOkay. Iâll come with you,â comes through, Luche and Drautos both relax minutely. When Nyx is in the company of other Glaives and safely heading to the Citadel, they both sit down.
The Captain pulls out his ear piece. âThis assassin is going to be trouble.â
âYeah,â Luche says, pulling out his own. âHe is.â
âFucking Ulric,â Drautos says.
âFuck him,â Luche agrees.
