Logan and Remus are lab test rats, Logan has been one for all of his life. He’s constantly been running around for years in the desperate hope that one day it will be enough to please the scientists who are consistently putting him through this. He wants it to be enough, he has run the mazes so many times that he even dreams about it, his little scampering paws dashing even in his sleep always searching for a way out, a way to find his own freedom and happiness. But he’s so very tired, and he’s tired of always trying to please please please... when he knows that in the end he’ll be put back in the cage. He’s so very close to just giving up.
A death sentence for all rats.
Remus is a new test subject, an old rat brought in by the father of a young girl that Remus had bitten when she had picked him up by his tail incorrectly. So needless to say, Remus was without a tail and without a decent home now as he was brought into the labs.
He’s put with Logan, a test to see just how well two rats who don’t know each other, or one another's scent will work together.
They don’t is the answer to that question.
And that night... they both go back into the cage without any food.
It’s only then, when there are no eyes on them that Remus starts to ask his questions to Logan, their cages being placed side by side. He doesn’t know this rat, that has far too many scars and grey hairs, but seeing as he’s the only one there... he’s all that Remus has right now. Well... him and the thin-haired one-eyed cat that limps everywhere, protected only by the janitors and one of the more... merciful scientists. But Logan... Logan has a look of sharpness and exhaustion about him, a curious and equally intriguing combination if you ask Remus.
He nudges the silent rat with his pink nose, “What is this place?” He finally asks, his soft squeaks being the only thing to fill the silent stifling air. Well, that and his hungry rumbling belly, that tells him to chew on the metal mesh of the cages until he has something at least to eat and fill his stomach.
Logan tired and numb blue eyes stare back at him, and Remus feels a pang of something hitting him. Concern? Warmth? Maybe even affection? He isn’t sure, but he nestled his body even closer to the side of the cage to give Logan some warmth regardless of not being given an answer after he had asked for one, he had never cared for a single creature other than himself in his entire life. But... he got the feeling that in this place... it wasn’t going to work like that.
Not if he wanted him and Logan to escape.
