You woke up as soon as the mattress dipped under the added weight. After years sleeping alone, you grew used to it and any extra weight beyond your cat made you snap into consciousness, the ghosts of your past still too fresh to really let you rest peacefully.

Yet, you didn’t open your eyes and did your best to keep your breathing calm and neutral as not to alert whoever had invaded your home and your bedroom that you were aware of them. You wanted to keep the element of surprise for as long as you could.

It was hard not to tense when you sensed a hand hovering over your body in a ghost of a touch. Only the tips of the gloved fingers brushing against your skin, making goosebumps pebble on your arm and you prayed your hunter dismissed that as an autonomous reaction of your body.

“I’ve watched you sleep enough times to know the difference, love.” The smooth and familiar baritone sounded so loud in the quiet room despite the fact he barely whispered.

Fear clawed your insides and you squeezed your eyes shut, willing this to be just a nightmare. Maybe you would wake up and find it was all in your head.

“Open your eyes,” he asked, his touch firmer now, tracing the shape of your face. “Don’t make me ask again.”

Slowly, you obeyed his command and it took you a moment to interpret what you were seeing, the distorted shapes in the darkness.

It was impossible to deny now.

The familiar solid body and well-shaped features disturbed only by the burnt scars on the right side of his face. It was him. It was August.

"I've looked for you in everyone. I thought I'd search the world in vain, now you look at me and the search is done,” he murmured, his mouth slanting into a smile before he leaned closer and met your lips.
